Harvey, Irma, Gaia and Beyond

This Bite-Size Blog is dedicated to my daughter, Diana, who was born during a total eclipse of a full moon in Atlanta, 38 years ago today--in the middle of Hurricane Season.

This blog is all about a "new look at life on Earth." Earlier this year, I discovered an independent "big picture" scientist who published a book in 1979 documenting his Gaia hypothesis--that planet Earth is a self-regulating organism, constantly making adjustments to preserve life on Earth.

Coincidently, Diana was born that same year, in 1979, the year that Dr. James Lovelock published his book, "Gaia, A New Look at Life on Earth." He is now alive and well at 98.

Dr. James Lovelock, born in England in 1919

Another coincidence. Dr. Lovelock named his theory, Gaia, after the Greek Goddess of the Earth. Diana's mother and I named her after the Roman Goddess of the Moon. We had another name picked out but delayed making our decision for one day--until we settled on a special name inspired by that rare lunar event.

How does Gaia affect the future of humans on our planet? From a 2010 BBC documentary, Lovelock answers that question:

If the Earth improves as a result of our presence, then we will flourish. If it doesn't, then we will die off.

Featured below is a 3-minute Introduction to Gaia in a format that the average high school student can easily understand.

Meet Gaia--Greek Goddess of the Earth

What does all of this have to do with Harvey, Irma and other monster storms? Just about everything. According to the Gaia Theory, Mother Nature is just doing her thing--continually making adjustments in the ecosystem that provides life for all species of flora and fauna on our planet.

Am I suggesting that climate change was the cause of both Harvey and Irma? No. I am saying that scientists are in almost complete agreement that human activity is the primary driver of climate change and that those rising temperatures have increased the likelihood of more, and even larger storms in our future.

Improving the Earth Lovelock concludes that the key to longterm human survival is living in a manner that actually "improves" the Earth. If we don't, he implies that Gaia will take care of business.

And monster hurricanes like Harvey and Irma may be Nature's way of reminding us that she may not have a place for us in her future.

My Conclusion. Our 2017 western lifestyle is not currently "improving" the Earth--and Gaia (Nature) will not let that harmful lifestyle continue indefinitely. We simply must learn to live in harmony with nature. This  4-minute video illustrates what will happen on planet Earth if we don't.

As you will see in the video, Gaia does an amazing job of restoring harmony on our planet--after we're gone.

Life on Earth after Humans

Question: Do you believe that planet Earth is being improved as a result of our existence? Before answering, you may want to take a look at this final  one-minute video.  Although it is an animated cartoon, it is not funny!

The Bottom Line. We all must understand that nothing is more important than sustainability. We must urgently address the most harmful parts of our lifestyle and quickly begin the process of learning to live in harmony with nature.

How can we get everyone to do that? One idea that might work is explained here.

Have Message, Will Travel.  Please contact me (by return email) if you'd like to discuss scheduling a presentation at a venue near you. I have given variations of my "big picture" sustainability talk to many types of audiences and, while it's alarming to many, the message seems to resonate with conscientious people of all ages and backgrounds.

It's a concept that every human needs to embrace--while there is still time to successfully resolve the many issues that threaten our future on this planet. My standard presentation is entitled:

Food. Health. Planet. Our Future as a Species.

Upcoming Talks:  Ithaca, NY, in Sept., Ontario, Canada in Oct., Buffalo and Rochester in Nov., Fort Myers, FL ( VegFest), in Jan. 2018 and at the vsh.org in Honolulu and Maui in April. To view all 48 slides in my latest presentation,  click here.
