Dear YANA-New Englanders,
Welcome to the fall! With our new Leadership Committee we have been collaborating and planning for many upcoming programs and events. Check out the information below and let us know if you have any organizations, events, or positions to highlight.

The
Urban Improvement Corps at Yale is a student-led tutoring and mentoring organization that seeks to inspire intellectual growth amongst New Haven youth. The only free tutoring and mentoring service in New Haven, the Urban Improvement Corps is growing rapidly - expanding from 10 tutees to 60 tutees since 2014. However, despite the encouraging expansion, their wait list of families hoping to join the program continues to balloon, reaching 300 families by the end of the 2016-2017 Academic Year.
To continue to serve New Haven families at scale and with the quality they have come to expect, UIC is transitioning the organization from a registered student organization to an autonomous non-profit entity. We are proud to note that YANA-New England Director of Social Impact Programs,
Laurie Cameron Craighead, SOM '16, is a newly minted UIC board member!
One of the UIC initiatives is to connect with education and community leaders, or
Education Partners --
education leaders and organizations with specific skills or expertise in tutor training, curriculum development, SAT prep, college application prep, grant writing, fundraising and the like -- across local New Haven and broader Connecticut. The objective of the
Education Partners initiative is to build a strong education network for the Urban Improvement Corps, one that will help the organization to better serve its students and the community.
We invite those interested in connecting with the Urban Improvement Corps as
Education Partners to reach out to
Isiah Cruz Duque '18, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Urban Improvement Corps at
[email protected].
