Hello Maize South community, and welcome to the 2017-18 school year. September is upon us, and MSHS is off to a great start. On August 15 we welcomed our freshmen into the MSHS family and we have been off and running ever since. Our current enrollment is at 886 students in grades 9-12. Our enrollment is up approximately 113 student from last year. I expect us to move back in Class 5A for activities and athletics. Each school across the state reports numbers to KSHSAA on September 20.
I want to let you know about a big day we have planned for Tuesday, October 3rd. The morning schedule will be the same at both Maize South HS and Maize HS. In the morning from 7:45-noon all seniors will take the ACT test. Upon completion of the test, the seniors will be dismissed for the rest of the day. Juniors will not have school on October 3rd, and they are encouraged to take a college visit that day. All freshmen and sophomores will take the ACT Aspire test from 7:45-noon. Upon completion of the test, the freshmen and sophomores will attend 3rd & 4th blocks. Here are some fast facts about the ACT Aspire test:

We believe the Aspire test will give us a standards-based system of assessment to monitor the progress of our students as we prepare them for college and career readiness opportunities.
Parent-Teacher conferences are on September 28-29 this fall. School will be in session on Thursday, September 28, but not on Friday, September 29. We hope to see you on campus for PT conferences.
We have a new parking policy for the 2017-18 school year. The policy is in place at both Maize South High School and Maize High School. The policy is in the student planner. "No vehicle is to be backed into parking stalls. Vehicles must be parked with tags displayed toward the driving lane". This also means no "pull-through parking". The nose of the vehicle should be facing inward towards the front of the parking stall.
Why this type of parking at both high schools?
School Resource Officers need to be able to view vehicle parking registrations and vehicle tags to ensure that vehicles are appropriately registered to park on campus during school hours. For those students that have classes at Maize High this semester or next, the same parking policies are being enforced at Maize High.
Construction is in full swing on the new Maize Career Academy on the southwest corner of Maize High School. The facility will be open to students and staff in January of 2018. MSHS students will be traveling to the new facility starting in January. We will keep the community posted on the grand-opening event that is being planned.
Construction continues on the locker room facility at the MSHS athletic stadium and the project is expected to be complete around September 22.
Extra-curricular activities are in full swing and we have a record number of students involved in sports and activities. Our fall sports include boy's soccer, girl's golf, girl's tennis, volleyball, boys and girls cross-country, and football.
Congratulations to the boys' and girls' cross-country teams for winning the Bishop Carroll Invitational over the weekend. Good job Mavs!
This week we host the Maize South Invitational soccer tournament on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Come out and support the Mavericks.
We open the home portion of our football season this Friday vs. McPherson. The Bullpups are ranked second in Class 4A and the Mavericks are ranked third
. Kick-off is set for 7pm at the stadium. We hope to see you at the stadium this week.
Homecoming week will be the week of September 18-22. Activities are being planned for spirit week, and we will also have our fourth annual homecoming parade on Friday, September 22 at approximately 1:45pm. We will play the Buhler Crusaders on Friday night at 7 p.m. The annual homecoming dance will follow the game in the MSHS commons.

Individual conferences with counselors have already begun. During these meetings, graduation requirements, post-high school plans and senior deadlines will be discussed. All students will leave the meeting with paperwork covering all the topics. The counselors will be calling students in alphabetically, Mr. Melichar starting with student last names "A" and Mrs. Brown with "M." If your student would like to meet early, they are welcome to schedule their own meeting, at their convenience.

ACT information sheets with our school CEEB code and practice booklets are available in the counseling office on the south wall bookshelf. ACT registration and payment is all done through
www.actstudent.org. Remember that Maize South High School is in Wichita when registering for a testing center. Students can, however, take the test at any available site.

All seniors will be taking an ACT on October 3rd during the school day. The fees for the assessment were built into your student's school fees. Registration is done by the school administration and counseling department.

College applications and scholarships deadlines are approaching. If still undecided, take time to schedule those final college visitations. It is advised that students begin applying for admission to at least three different colleges of interest. Students can not apply for or accept any institutional scholarships (scholarships given by the college) until they are admitted to the school. Most of these scholarship deadlines are November 1st.

We will be giving the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) at MSHS on October 23rd. There is NO CHARGE for this test and students can sign up in the counseling office beginning October 9th through the 20th.

Healthy Happenings at Maize South High
School
Welcome back to school! Here are a few
important messages
from the School Nurse:
1. This i a notice to parents that students
will have vision
and hearing screenings performed during this school year
by the school nurse according to the district-wide
schedule. The scheduled screenings are as follows.
Vision screening is to be completed with all sophomore
and all senior students. Hearing screening is to be
completed with all sophomore students.
Students new to Maize School District will
also have vision and
hearing screenings at
some time during the school year.
PARENTS MAY EXEMPT THEIR STUDENT
FROM THE
SCHOOL SCREENINGS WITH
A WRITTEN NOTICE to the
school nurse.
We ask the note to include the date of the
last
professional exam or their next scheduled
professional exam.
2. Students who wear contact lenses can and should always
have lens solution and a spare lens case at school. They
can be kept in the student's locker or backpack for
unexpected needs. Never share contact lens solution or
cases because sharing risks sharing eye infections.
Learning to be prepared for your health needs is part of
learning to take responsibility for our health.
3. It's also a great idea for students to keep an extra set of
clothing in their locker for a quick change of clothes for
unexpected spills and accidents.
4. Medication safety at school: Maize District has a
medication policy covering the administration of
medication at school and school sponsored events. When
a student may need medication during the school day,
then parents must complete the request form with the
school nurse. Each school nurse can assist parents to
complete the form if questions arise.

Eclipse 2017
Students and staff had their eyes to the sky on August 21st. A solar eclipse, where the Moon eclipses the Sun's light, was visible from Maize South High. While Wichita only had 93% coverage, it was still a unique experience for everyone. All students, with permission, were given eclipse glasses for the event. The glasses were generously purchased by Maize USD 266. Students with glasses were taken outside for 20 minutes to see the evolution of the eclipse.
A total solar eclipse event has not happened in the United States for decades. Interestingly enough though, the next total solar eclipse in the United States will occur in 2024... a short seven years from now.

Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education during the school year (Term 1; Term 2; Term 3; Term 4). The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. New Staff 2017
Tara Ayres has been a Teacher of the Deaf for Sedgwick County Special Education Cooperative for 20 years. She works with Deaf and Deaf Blind children in four districts including Maize. Tara and her husband enjoys watching their four children participate in school sports and going for rides on their Harley.
Lyndsey Brown is starting her 7th year in education. She taught 5th grade in Junction City for 3 years and then moved to an elementary counseling position there. Next, she moved to Clay Center where she was a middle school counselor and volleyball coach for two years. Lyndsey is starting her first year as a counselor at Maize South High School and Senior Class Sponsor. Lyndsey has four kids and loves all things Disney. She also enjoys spending her Satruday's in the Fall at Kansas State Football Games.
Denise Hogan is excited to be at Maize South High School starting her 16th year in teaching Special Education. She has a 19-year-old Son, Tristan that is a proud 2016 Maize Graduate. While at home she stays busy with family and all her various pets. For the last 15 years, Denise has enjoyed sponsoring the Maize Tri-County Sports Soccer; Basketball and Pep Teams while they have represented the Maize District with integrity. She has also been a sponsor of Friendship Club and loves to watch all the incredible benefits the club has had on the students, buddies, teachers, the school and community!
Robyn Jaso is starting her 10th year in education. She taught English for nine years at Newton High School before coming back to her "home" district. Robyn graduated from Maize High School in 2004. Not only will she be teaching, but she will be coaching the JV volleyball team. Robyn loves spending time with her family, traveling, reading and watching college basketball. Go Shocks!
Inshin Kim graduated from Ewha Womans University in South Korea. She had taught French at High School for three years in her country. She moved to America in 1993. She has taught math for 14 years at Topeka High School. She has two sons and a wonderful husband. Her hobbies are swimming, Zumba, and yoga. She is active in her church, teaching
Sunday
School class and singing in the choir. She became an American citizen in March 2008. She received a national board certificate in 2012.
Jacinda Kinzie is starting her 23rd year of teaching. She has been in Special Education for all of these years except 5 years. She started her career at Arkansas City Middle School being the 7th grade Interrcated teacher. Then her family moved to Manhattan, KS. Go Cats!!! She taught one year at Manhattan High before spending the last 14 years at Junction City High School in the Special Education & ESOL departments. Jacinda loves spending time with her husband, kids, and grandkids.
Tyler Koepp is starting his first year at MSHS as the vocal music teacher. Mr. Koepp is coming to us from Butler Community College, where he taught as an adjunct instructor of vocal music. He is thrilled to bring college experience and expectations to our Mavs. Mr. Koepp is originally from Nebraska, and - like most everyone from the state - is a passionate Husker football fan. You can catch Mr. Koepp singing opera this year at Wichita State!
My name is Thea Lippoldt. I've been a special education teacher for the Sedgwick County Co-op for 13 years. I've spent all of those years in Maize.
Friendship Club is my favorite thing about my job. I love seeing students with special needs hanging out with their peers. I
graduated from Wichita State and really enjoy going to Shocker games.
I am married and have two boys. My sophomore is at Maize High School, so we are a house divided. My other son is 19.
I'm excited to be at Maize South High School this year.
Mack Morehead is starting his fourth year of teaching. Prior to teaching English at MSHS, he taught 7th and 8th grade English down the road at MMS. Mack has taken on the Debate class this year and will also serve as the Debate coach. The wedding bells are ringing this year for Mack; he is getting married this September in beautiful Winfield, Kansas. Aside from enjoying time with family, Mack has two Corgi dogs- Midas and Mira- whom he loves to walk and play with; proudly sings the Rock Chalk chant during KU basketball season; enjoys cooking and reading; and traveling is always his goal when possible. I really look forward to this year at MSHS!
Mike Pope is starting his 15th year in education. He taught science and coached Cross Country and Track for 13 years at North High school before coming to Maize South. He has two daughters that have or are in the OneMaize system, Aspen, who graduated from MHS last year, and Kasidie, who will be a sophomore at MHS. Mike be teaching Honors Biology and Chemistry, as well as serving as the Head Cross Country and Asst. Track coach at Maize South High School. Mike loves spending time doing triathlons and attending Shocker and Jayhawk events with his wife Monique and daughters.
Tracy Roe is starting her 9th
year in education. She has been at Campus High School the last 8 years and excited to start this year at Maize South High School. Tracy graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Mathematics degree and Business Administration minor. She then attended Wichita State University completing the Transition to Teaching Program. Tracy enjoys hanging out with her family and attending sporting events.
My Name is Jesse Shetler, I am a new teacher at MSHS. I will be teaching Physics and Earth Science. I am not new to the teaching profession. Before coming to Maize South, I taught for 25 years at Campus HIgh School. I also taught for several years in the Peace Corps. During that time I was a teacher trainer stationed in the south pacific island country of Tonga. I have also coached many sports, including wrestling, cross-country and tennis. I have a daughter and a son. My daughter is a junior at KSU and my son will leave to serve in the Navy Nuclear program in a few months. I am excited to be at MSHS and looking forward to a great year.
Nicole Woodard is starting her 3rd
year in education. She was a traveling Adapted Physical Education teacher at USD259 school district. Nicole is starting her third year as a Physical Education Concepts teacher at Maize South High School. Nicole loves spending time with her husband and their golden doodle, "Gunner." Her family is super excited since she is expecting her first child in October.
Will Vinduska. This is my second year teaching, and first year here in Maize. Previously I taught at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School, also teaching Social Studies. I have 3 children. My oldest is currently a third grader at Pray-Woodman, but all of my kids are excited about being Mavericks.
