Message from
Chapter President
Greetings Members,

I want to update you about the critical work being done to represent all social workers as well as the clients and communities we serve.

Our country and the State of Florida have a variety of political perspectives. NASW-FL recognizes and respects these various viewpoints, and acknowledges that we have a vast array of members from diverse backgrounds. One challenge we face (and have in the past) is when there are actions occurring in our country and communities contrary to our Code of Ethics. As social workers we have a duty and obligation, based on our Code of Ethics, to speak out, engage in appropriate communications and address issues of racism, inequality, hate and oppression.

During the past several months our country has struggled with these issues. While not new, it is through our diversity, including that of various political ideologies, that we can be our best. Addressing issues of race and politics within our profession is complex. I urge all social workers to consider how your Code of Ethics can guide you in conversations and actions as we move forward.

Our Code of Ethics states:  "The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty" (pg.1). How will you enhance human well-being? How will you work to empower people who are "vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty"? It can look very different for each of us, from small steps of reaching out to neighbors to very daunting tasks of starting new programs or running for office.

I believe we have an opportunity to bring our diverse viewpoints together as a united profession to ensure we address the core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person and the importance of human relationships. This constellation of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession. Core values, and the principles that flow from them, must be balanced within the context and complexity of the human experience.

I know we have different opinions and viewpoints; however, I task each member that we work as a united force to strengthen our voice. Let's start with uniting together as we address these issues step-by-step and side-by-side.

NASW-FL offers opportunities to work together through your local unit meetings, being a part of state committees and task forces, and coordinating diversity dialogues. Our state unit leadership is striving to address issues of diversity, to ensure we engage in our lobbying effort that match our Code of Ethics regardless of political affiliation and that we continue promoting the profession and ensuring our clients receive the most appropriate care.

Please consider ways you can partner with NASW-FL to promote positive change, to respect one another with our differences and work together for stronger communities. We look forward to working with you.

Thank you

Katharine Campbell, PhD, LCSW
August Board Meeting Update
The NASW-FL Board met August 11 - 12 in Orlando, Florida.

Board Training was held on Friday, areas covered included information on Chapter's organization, policies, operations, finances and unit operations. There was also discussion on the roles of Boards and staff and relations with National NASW.

The Units reported workshops, networking and kick-off events being offered statewide for members. The Chapter will sponsor an LCSW Prep Course in September.

The Chapter Committee on Nomination Leadership Identification (CCNLI) award process and the call for proposals and exhibitor information for the 2018 Social Work Conference along with the CE requirements for 2017-2019 licensure renewal are on line at the Chapter website (www.naswfl.org). This year's Conference will be held June 14-16, 2018, in Ft. Lauderdale.

The Delegate Assembly met on August 4 and the delegates from the Florida Chapter attended. The Delegate Assembly sets the social policies and program priorities for the association. They also updated the Code of Ethics and the NASW membership regions at this year meeting.

The 2018 Legislative Agenda was discussed and a draft was proposed and accepted. The 2018 Legislative Priorities are:
  • Increase funding and accessibility for mental health, behavioral health and medical health care services.
  • Promote and support legislative efforts and policies that are aligned with social, economic and environmental justice and oppose policies and actions that are not.
  • Promote legislation which supports the sustainability of social workers in Florida.
A complete copy of the 2018 Legislative agenda may be found at http://www.naswfl.org/legislative.html.

The results of the Diversity Survey were discussed. A complete report may be found in a separate article in this newsletter.

The Membership report was reviewed. Each unit will be working on two events this year to increase membership retention and recruitment. The 2017-2018 Program Priorities were reviews and approved.

The next Board Meeting is scheduled for November 2017.
How to Help with
Hurricane Harvey Relief
NASW/TX is respectfully requesting that you
not call the Chapter office.  They really cannot handle the volume of calls and are doing "triage" and making referrals to other disaster specific organizations.

We as a Chapter are not directly organizing efforts statewide but directing folks to resources.  Also you can check on the Facebook pages for Houston, Gulf Coast, Southeast Texas for local efforts and needs.  The Governor has temporarily suspended the need for a Texas license if you are working in a hospital and in some cases certified to accept Medicaid.  NASW/TX is asking him, our licensing board, and our state agency HHS, to temporarily suspend the need across the board for Texas Licenses so that out of state folks can assist.

You can check our website for updates which we are doing several times a day at
www.naswtx.org . Also keep in mind that if you decide to come and are not a part of an approved or organized group to provide services you might find lodging and food a challenge in addition to not having a license to practice in Texas.

Please go to the URL's below to register as a volunteer.  In the coming days and weeks we will know more and if you register with VOAD and Red Cross they can call you directly to help. If you are a certified Red Cross Volunteer your license is honored in the area/state you are sent to help.

https://www.nvoad.org/hurricane-harvey/volunteer/

http://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/lp/hurricane-harvey-health-professionals

In the meantime, you can donate monies to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Fund and the Houston Disaster Fund or other local disaster funds for areas affected.

Again thank you for your concern and caring about Texans effected by the Hurricane!

Legislative Update
2018 NASW-FL Legislative Agenda
Each year, the NASW-FL Board of Directors approves its legislative agenda. This agenda is a broad perspective of our overall goals for the session and what we stand for as an association. Later, as bills are filed with the Florida Legislature, this agenda will be our guide for what bills to support or oppose. It also helps direct our action when the Governor's office or other executive agencies create new policies that impact our profession or our clients.
NASW Florida 2017 Diversity Survey Results Overview
We want to thank members who took time to share their important input with the Florida Chapter. The NASW Member Diversity Survey 2017 consisted of a 20 Likert-style items and seven open-ended items. Six percent (N=297) of the NASW Florida members responded to some or all the items on the survey.  The table included below sums the responses to the first 20 items of the survey. Many members were not aware of what NASW Florida is doing in response to advocacy for many groups of citizens living in Florida. Most members are not aware of the Diversity Plan for local units or the Florida Chapter. A significant number is not aware of significant efforts by the Florida Chapter to address diversity dialogue between divided communities. There is also a perception that local units do not have a balanced representation of diverse groups of social workers.
