Electronic Injury and Illness Reporting
Injury and Illness reporting has taken the leap into the digital world. On August 1st, OSHA opened the web portal for injury and illness reporting. Up to this point OSHA has primarily obtained the information through onsite inspections or compliance audits of employers. The new reporting requirements will allow OSHA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) better access to information. Having access to more current data on injury and illness developments will allow both agencies to better address trends in multiple industries.
The reporting portal has been designed to be user friendly, with step-by-step instructions to help employers create their establishment, add data, and upload files. The electronic reporting has been a long-time practice for employers with 250 employees or more. The greatest impact will be for employers with 20-249 employees. OSHA has gone to great lengths to make the transition as easy as possible. The new requirements will be phased in over a two-year period.
All covered establishments must submit information from their completed 2016 Form 300A by July 1, 2017. In 2018, covered establishments with 250 or more employees must submit information from all completed 2017 forms (300A, 300, and 301) by July 1, 2018; and covered establishments with 20-249 employees must submit information from their completed 2017 Form 300A by July 1, 2018.
