New School Year Set to Start in Roxbury
With a bevy of new educational initiatives, some security enhancements and even a few new roofs, Superintendent of Schools Loretta Radulic is excited to start her second full year as schools chief.
"I am very excited. I think this will be a school year with a lot of positive changes and it will just continue our vision."
Some 3,500 students, in grades K-12, will return to school for the 2017/18 year on Thursday, Sept. 7. Teachers and staff go back on Sept. 5 and 6.
The new year will start with new roofs on several of the buildings. Work is ongoing at the high school, the Kennedy School and the middle school.
Work should be completed on all three by the time students return to school, she said.
In addition, the construction of security vestibules, or "man traps" is underway at the high school, the middle school and the Lincoln/Roosevelt School. It will provide visitors to the schools with a secure place to wait for security clearance before actually being admitted to the school building. The vestibules will be built at the four elementary buildings next summer.
There's a new science program for grades K-2, a number of curriculum updates, new courses for high school students and a number of redesigned electives as well.
There have also been several upgrades to technology courses.

Standardized Test Results Discussed by Roxbury School Board
The last Board of Education meeting before the 2017-18 school year begins yielded good results in terms of the latest round of standardized tests.
The Board of Education held their second meeting of the 2017-18 school year on Monday, Aug. 28.
Assistant Superintendent Charles Seipp's presentation on the PARCC results was the focal point. PARCC stands for the "Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers."
In 2015, it became the standardized test to replace the NJASK and HSPA.
Seipp explained where the areas of growth were in each of the test's categories at each grade level compared with last year's data.
He said he was pleased to report that the geometry goals set last year were exceeded, across the board, in the district.
Seipp emphasized why the PARCC is an important assessment tool for the K-12 district. Click here to read more about these results and more from the Roxbury Register.

Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Girls Soccer Divisional Alignment and Season Preview, 2017
Parsippany Hills was the surprise team of the year a season ago after rebounding from a winless September and a 13th seed to win a Group 2 state title, but Roxbury should once again be the team to beat in the National Division. Even with the loss of Jamie Irwin, Roxbury has loads of returning talent from a team that won a Morris County Tournament title last year, including Karly Forker and her team-leading 14 goals.
West Morris is usually loaded with talent and gave Roxbury some good fights last year, including a meeting in the county final, but in addition to graduation losses, West Morris lost both Emily Leyson and Leanne Englemann to academy teams. Kaitlin Robinson and Erin O'Neill return for a Randolph team that won 13 games last year and challenged as one of the best in the conference.

Roxbury Native Shooting Film in Town, Looking for Extras
A Succasunna native is inviting residents to be extras in his newest film, which will shoot in the township on Labor Day Weekend.
Joe Gawalis, a Class of 2003 Roxbury High School graduate, is shooting "Bare Knuckle Brawler" at the Cemetery of First Presbyterian in Main Street on Saturday.
"It's a story about a family of police officers and a young man who rebelled against them. But when his brother dies, he's forced to redeem himself and figure out what happened," Gwalis said. "It's a throwback to those 80s action movies like 'Road House.'"
The cemetery will be the setting of the brother's funeral, and anyone is welcome to participate.
"We would love for as many people in town as possible show up," Gawalis said. "It's a sad scene but it's going to be fun for everybody. And Martin Kove and William DeMeo will be in the scene, so they can act alongside them."
For people interested in playing an extra in the scene, the shoot is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 2. People should show up dressed for a funeral at Lincoln Roosevelt School, 34 North Hillside, that morning. Producers will then walk extras through the rest of the process. Click here to read more about this alumni and this acting opportunity from the Daily Record.

Roxbury Chemical Engine Co. 1 partnered with

Roxbury Pitches Softball Complex for County Parks Award
Roxbury officials believe they hit one out of the park when they converted a former construction debris dumping ground in Landing into a glistening new softball complex.
Now they're hoping a county parks organization agrees.
The township is nominating the Landing Park Recreation Complex for an award from the Morris Park Alliance and Roxbury Councilman Fred Hall believes the park, which
opened in 2015,
deserves the prize. "The decision will be made around Sept. 20 and there's an award banquet sometime in the middle of October if we win," said Hall. "I think we have a good shot at it, to be honest with you."
Click here to read more about this park and the nomination process from Tap Into Roxbury.
More Veterans will be Added to Memorial in Roxbury
Another two dozen names, at least, will be added to the veteran's memorial at Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna.
The project, which involved gathering the names of township war veterans who were inadvertently left off the titanium plaques initially, is being undertaken by Jacob Rosenstein, who works in the township clerk's office.
The plaques bear the names of some 1,000 veterans who served in every way from the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror. The township is working on getting guest speakers, as well as the police honor guard for the rededication ceremony in October. Roxbury clergy members are also expected to speak in what he estimated would be a 30 minute ceremony.
Click here to read more about this dedication from the Roxbury Register.
Roxbury Will Build New Salt Dome
For just under $300,000, the township will have a new salt storage facility, which will be located on the public works site on Pine Street in Kenvil.
Public Works Director Rick Blood detailed the project when the Township Council met on Tuesday, Aug. 22. The council then unanimously passed a resolution authorizing the awarding of the contract to Bulk Storage, Inc., in the amount of $289,850.
Blood said a total of $360,000 had been budgeted for the purchase. Click here to read more about this new addition to Roxbury from the Roxbury Register.

The Deep Roots of Roxbury's Uprooted Gazebo
 The recent
re-positioning of the gazebo on the lawn of the Roxbury Public Library on Succasunna's Main Street has generated excitement and renewed interest in the 19th century gazebo that stands in stark contrast to the 1974 library building.
In spite of the architectural dichotomy of the two, they bear a significant relationship; one worth exploring.
