But former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher makes the word more intriguing. In his essay, "A Shared Moment of Trust," from the anthology  This I Believe, he points out that in our global world, cooperation across differences is critical. And that in 2003, for example, doctors in five nations, working closely together, were able to quickly identify the SARS virus, and save thousands of lives.

In the mid-1980s, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Washington, was on life support, and Olympia Presbytery had begun nudging the session to consider pulling the plug.

Drugs, crime, and gangs had infested the church's deteriorating neighborhood. A handful of loyal members attended worship and struggled to maintain the church building.

"But something surprising happened," says the church's current pastor, Matt Robbins-Ghormley. "Resurrection happened." As he describes it, the congregation went from being "on the brink of extinction" to becoming energized through mission in the community.

Many churches in North America are completely disconnected from the people around them.  They are waiting for people to come to their church, and less and less people are finding their way to their doors. If this describes your church, then you may be unaware of some of the barriers that exist between you and the community around you.

People outside your church have no idea who you are or what you are about. A handful of people enter your building and leave your building periodically. But what happens there or what you care about is a complete mystery to those outside the church.

The people in your church are really involved with things connected to your church. Sports leagues, social events, friendships are all internal. People are so involved in church stuff, that they don't have relationships with neighbors or others in the broader community.

Racism is the opposite of what God intends for humanity. It is the rejection of the other, which is entirely contrary to the Word of God incarnate in Jesus Christ. Racism is a lie about our fellow human beings, for it says that some are less than others. Because of our biblical understanding of who God is and what God intends for humanity, the PC(USA) must stand against, speak against and work against racism.

As part of an ongoing campaign to address racial injustice, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is sharing a wealth of antiracism resources - including studies, books and training - to equip the greater church to work against racism.
