The Pegasus Project Newsletter
SEPTEMBER 2017

Your Gift Matters!

The Pegasus Project is changing lives every day for horses and humans by fulfilling our mission to rescue and rehome neglected animals. We completely depend upon your continued generosity to keep the operation going. To assist in our fundraising goals, Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) is sponsoring North Texas Giving Day on Thursday, September 14th.

Members of the Pegasus board of directors and a group of our oh-so-awesome core supporters are providing matching funds for gifts made in connection with North Texas Giving Day. Our Matching Donors will match EVERY gift made on September 14th dollar-for-dollar up to $32,500!

In addition, The Pegasus Project will receive extra bonus funds from CFT for each donation of $25 or more made on Thursday, September 14th. More than $2 million in bonus funds are available to qualifying nonprofits! (Gifts of less than $25 are welcome and appreciated by not eligible for bonus funds.)

With the bonus funds from CFT and our core supporters' 1:1 matching funds, donations totalling $32,500 will turn into more than $65,000! So, please mark your calendar for September 14th, save your pennies, and plan to donate generously!

Also, every donation made to Pegasus through the North Texas Giving Day website on September 14th helps our chances of winning additional money. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day ranging from $500 to $7500! With more than 75 total prizes being awarded, our chances to maximize your gift are great.

By visiting the NorthTexasGivingDay.org Pegasus link between 6am and midnight (Central Time) on September 14th and donating $25 or more, you will make a tremendous impact on the work Pegasus can do. You can give securely from your computer, smart phone or mobile device. With your help, we WILL reach our  $80,000 fundraising goal  on North Texas Giving Day! These funds will go directly to the care, support and training of the thirty-six rescued equine currently residing at the Pegasus ranch and will be used to assist equine victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Please join us at The Forge in Ben Wheeler, starting at 5:30pm on September 14th. We will host a Pegasus Partner Happy Hour with drink specials and a donation station available to help you make your gift to the horses. When you leave, give us a copy of your receipt, and The Forge will donate your entire purchase back to The Pegasus Project!

~Horsemanship Clinic~
Bruce Logan returns to Pegasus Ranch
October 7 & 8

The Pegasus Project is fortunate to be affiliated with some very fine horsemen. We are particularly fortunate that these horsemen are willing to come share their knowledge with the people of East Texas. Bruce Logan, the 2016 AQHA VRH Open Ranch Cutting World Champion, will be teaching a clinic at the Pegasus Ranch on October 7 & 8.

Bruce, who operates a seven thousand acre working cattle ranch in Loving, Texas, is a gifted colt starter. He is known throughout the US and abroad for his ability to help challenging horses work through problematic patterns and behaviors. Bruce has started thousands of colts and worked with countless horses trained in all disciplines. His horsemanship philosophy is based on a foundation that helps the horse stay confident and supple. He believes in putting the horse's mind, body and spirit first to accomplish the goals set for the horse and rider.

On October 7 & 8, Bruce will be at the Pegasus ranch working with a variety of horses and students, including several Pegasus horses from the Phoenix Herd. If you are interested in riding with Bruce or simply auditing this clinic, click here for details:  Bruce Logan Clinic

~COCO~
From Kill Pen to Happily Ever After

Coco upon her arrival at Pegasus - April 2017

Some of the most amazing horses end up at kill pens. Coco is one of them. In the winter of 2015, Pegasus supporter Sharon Bowden, spotted this beautiful bay mare on a kill pen site. Something told Sharon that she absolutely had to rescue this sweet-eyed beauty. Coco simply spoke to her. Knowing nothing about the mare, Sharon and her husband Jerry, made the 13 hour round trip from Marble Falls, Texas to the Oklahoma kill pen where Coco was housed. Upon arrival, they found a very sick horse. Coco had a shoulder injury and was suffering from a severe respiratory illness. Without Sharon's intervention, Coco would surely have been shipped to her death.

After months of veterinary care, Coco recovered. Sharon quickly discovered that she had rescued a very well-trained and well-mannered horse. Believed to be in her late teens, Coco proved to be excellent under saddle, with lots of go! Sharon was thrilled with her new trail partner. However, within about a year of saving Coco, personal health issues required Sharon and Jerry to give up their horses. The Bowdens wanted Coco and Chili to be protected forever and to be adopted to only the best of homes. Consequently, they turned to The Pegasus Project for help.

In April of 2017, Coco and Chili came to the Pegasus ranch. We spent five months getting them settled, acclimated and tuned up. On September 3rd, Coco left for her forever home with Bruce Montgomery of Bullard, Texas. Bruce and his wife, Karen, previously adopted Susie and Jolene (a Pegasus horse and donkey) and Buford (a donkey from Winners Circle Rescue), and so Coco joined a herd of happy, healthy rescue animals!

The Montgomeries are thrilled to have their herd complete, and we are excited to have found Coco a loving, forever home. Blessings to Sharon and Jerry Bowden for saving Coco from slaughter. This lovely horse deserved the beautiful life she now lives. Once again, love wins.

Hurricane Harvey

The devastation inflicted on the Texas Gulf Coast this past week by Hurricane Harvey has been stunning. Flooding unlike anything we've ever known is still ravaging our state. Hundreds of thousands of people and animals are suffering and will continue to suffer in the aftermath of this monster storm. We at Pegasus are here to offer assistance any way we can.

The Pegasus Project is a rescue partner to both the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)  and  the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). These national organizations have rescue teams on the ground in the gulf region as we speak. Pegasus is on stand-by to accept as many equine as we can  accommodate once they can be recovered and transported to our facility.

We are also assisting The SPCA of East Texas who is accepting donations of horse quality coastal hay (square bales) to transport to the Beaumont, Texas area. In addition, a local barn has taken in more than a dozen displaced horses from Houston, and Pegasus is providing financial support for the purchase of hay and feed to take care of them until they can return home.

If you would like to make a donation to Pegasus earmarked for the Hurricane Harvey horses, we will ensure that your funds are properly utilized. Click here and put Hurricane Harvey in your note: DONATE

Finally, a portion of the funds raised by Pegasus on North Texas Giving Day will be used to support equine displaced by Hurricane Harvey. So be sure to GET UP AND GIVE on September 14th. Your donation will be DOUBLED.
