Air Force Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron training for CCPOs
Air Force Chaplain Candidate Intensive Internship

Ancient wisdom from the book of Proverbs advises, "Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray (22:6)"

As the Air Force conducts their Reserve Command Chaplain Candidate Intensive Internship at six locations this summer, they are putting into effect what the writer of Proverbs knew all along. This intensive internship program is one of two supervised opportunities provided by the Air Force for all their CCPOs. During the time of training the candidates are exposed to the breadth of the Air Force, the variety of missions performed, and encouraged to consider their own desires and abilities to serve as a chaplain in the Air Force.

Prior to the intensive program the candidates have attended Air Force Commissioned Officer Training to better understand their role in the overall institution and gain hands on knowledge of the full extent of their identities as military chaplains.

Recognizing military chaplaincy is a specific calling and that not all may be suited for this ministry, the Air Force encourages candidates to evaluate their suitability for service. Regarding the impact of the training, Chaplain (Maj) Eusebia Rios, program manager for the AF Candidate Program, says, "The candidates may feel they no longer fit in the program, it's not what they thought, or the training has exposed that they may need more refinement or pastoral experience."

We commend the Air Force for this expenditure of resources and commitment to the formation or their future chaplains during a time when they may still make wise decisions about their future. In the resource constrained environment of our current military service, preserving this extensive program is no doubt, a major effort.

As a proponent of professional development and chaplaincy for life, the MCA commends the women and men of the Air Force Chaplain Corps for their dedication and pursuit of excellence, not just for today but for the future as well. We also welcome CCPOs as members of the MCA during their formation process and count them as valuable members of our community.

Executive Director Tr ansition

Nearly two years ago the MCA gave me the opportunity to serve as your Executive Director. During those two years we have accomplished much with the help, support, and contributions of our members and friends. The focus on Professional Military Chaplaincy, the development of mentoring strategies focused on the unique needs of chaplains, the enhancement of our quarterly magazine, our representation among other MSOs and VSOs here in the national capital region, and our efforts in working with congregations to enhance acceptance of and delivery of ministry to military members and veterans in local communities are just some of the areas of focus we have pursued. Advances we have made have come from your commitment, the members, who make the MCA what it is.

Serving as your Executive Director has been an honor and privilege. It is with some regret then, that I share I have received a call to a new position. I won't share the details now as arrangements are still in progress. Let me assure everyone, my commitment to the "Voice of Chaplaincy" remains strong and I look forward to continued involvement and support of the MCA. Thank you for the encouragement you have been during my time supporting you. We continue together as chaplains for life.
