"We want to make sure there is a commercially viable composite recycling industry," Dale Smith, Boeing's strategy manager, advanced materials & fabrication, Product Development, said at the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association annual meeting July 10. "The analysis in this year's review provides a statistical summary of aviation safety in the EASA Member States and identifies the most important safety challenges faced in European aviation today. This data-driven analysis will lead to the development of safety actions across domain-specific safety risk portfolios and will define the priorities on which the Agency will focus on. These priorities will be presented in the next edition of the European Plan for Aviation Safety to be published in December 2017..."

Association Update
From James Cobbold, Air Salvage International
|
|
Dear AFRA Members,
I trust those who attended the recent ASA/AFRA Conference in Reston found the event both informative, enjoyable and a great networking opportunity. For me personally, I found the choice of workshops both varied and informative. And with this conference being more intimate compared to the larger MRO and ISTAT events, it's a great way to meet with new and existing contacts to discuss business opportunities and other industry related topics.
Having recently been voted onto the Board of Directors, the conference was my first opportunity to meet some of my fellow Board members along with the AFRA staff and allowed me to attend my first Board of Directors Meeting. This gave me my first insight into the running of this industry recognised Association and my initial thoughts were very encouraging. I was pleasantly surprised how structured the Association is along with how committed existing Board Members and staff are into growing the organisation, the efforts they put in to ensure members receive all the benefits you should expect, as well as providing you with the opportunity to develop your own business.
Not only am I excited to be joining the Board, I am also looking forward to Co-Chairing the Communications Committee along with Mike Corne from eCube Solutions. All the committees are very active and are a great forum for member engagement. With this in mind, I actively encourage more members to get involved and put their valued opinions forward as a fresh approach can only benefit all those involved.
With the volume of members being involved on the various committees, coupled with increasing member numbers (including various airlines), I honestly believe the Association is in a very strong position and in good hands moving into the second half of 2017.
Best regards
James Cobbold

Government Affairs Program
The Government Affairs Committee is in the process of finalizing a policy position statement in regards to the Circular Economy. In addition, back in June a delegation of AFRA had a meeting with Kathleen Van Brempt, Belgian member of the European Parliament for the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group. In 2014 Ms. Van Brempt made a
parliamentary question on airplane recycling
, and the subsequent answer by the Environment Commissioner includes a reference to AFRA. During the meeting with Ms. Van Brempt the AFRA delegation explained the activities of the Association, the importance of the BMP guide and the issues that aircraft end-of-life is facing. In particular, issues of international trade, waste definition and waste transport legislation were discussed. Ms. Van Brempt was quite receptive on this topic, and remarked that it would be important to recycle and reuse materials from aircrafts in the European Union. As a follow-up, Ms. Van Brempt offered to make another parliamentary question to the European Commission on the topic of waste transport legislation and waste definition in relation to aircraft.

AFRA BMP Development Committee
The BMP Development Committee held an in-person meeting during the AFRA Annual Conference and reviewed prospective edits and improvements to the BMP. Concluding the BMP Development Committee meeting, the AFRA Board of Directors reviewed the Committee's recommended edits and approved the BMP 3.3 Single Accreditation Program. More information regarding the announcement of the updated BMP will be circulated in the coming days. In addition, we are looking to schedule our next teleconference(s) in late-July and early-August.
