Praying With Your Eyes Open

In Sunday's Time for Young Disciples Amy challenged the children and congregation to pray constantly as we go about our daily lives with our eyes open. This challenge made me wonder how I live a life of active prayer in the ordinary encounters and circumstances of my life. If we are praying with our eyes open then the simplest errands or the most menial chores can be holy work. Whatever we do, it is part of our participation in God's work to restore creation.

Whatever work we do - whether paid employment, volunteerism, scholarship, hobbies or other activities and labors that occupy our waking time - it can be the very work of God to bring wholeness to the world. What this requires of us is to be Christ-like within our places of work, seeking what is good for each other as we actively engage in justice, love, compassion, and listening to one another and to the whole of creation. May we love God and each other, making ordinary work holy, as we live out our prayers with our eyes open.

Always seek what is good for each other - and for all people.
Rejoice always, pray constantly, and give thanks for everything -
for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18
