Time To Get Busy Again…

We have completed another fiscal year in a positive manner!  That’s the GREAT news.  However, if I have learned anything over a lifetime of leading successful non-profit organizations, there is no time to sit back and yawn, while patting ourselves on the back.

We need to look at every facet of this organization again and decide what worked well and what could be tweaked.  We don’t want new technology, best practices, and new fundraising techniques to pass our doors unnoticed.

President & CEO

Remembering "Big Steve"

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Matthew 25:13

At Macomb County Habitat for Humanity, those words ring true!  Suddenly and without warning, one of the staff that helped to open the doors at our new Shelby ReStore, passed away.  His family tells us that a brain aneurysm took “Big Steve” Dahl from us and into the arms of the Lord.

Because he was part of our team and so important to us, we would like to do two things.

First, I have asked the family if they need anything at all to make his transition easier.  So far, they have indicated that everything is covered but we are waiting.

Second, we would like to permanently dedicate a paint aisle to Steve in our Shelby store.  Steve had often asked the leadership team to buy paint and supplies and sell them.  Now, in his memory, we will be asking the community to help make Steve’s wish come true.

Our goal will be to raise $10,000 so that we can purchase all of the items that Steve had requested.  Then, every year moving forward, when you shop at the ReStore, you will see Steve’s face on that aisle and be reminded of his kindness, hard work, and genuine love for Habitat and the families we serve.

None of us knows when our day will come, but based on everything we knew about Steve, he was ready for the Lord and for eternal happiness.

We give thanks for his life and for his dreams.  And, as always, we keep his family close in our prayers.

In celebration of our 10 year anniversary of our partnership with Chippewa Valley Schools, we are also wishing a happy retirement to Mr. Joe Churches, the Construction Trades teacher at Dakota High School. Donor Spotlight
Our partners at  IBEW Local 58 and  Ferndale Electric came out on one of our build sites to install all of the electrical equipment in our veteran house. We are so grateful for the time and materials donated by these amazing people! Thank you to Andy Dunbar for organizing this generous donation!
Thank you to our Faith Partners!
While we just closed out our 2016-2017 fiscal year, we look back and reflect on how thankful we are to have so many generous and supportive faith partners in our community. We would like to thank the following groups for supporting us throughout the year:

First Methodist Church of Mt. Clemens brought a volunteer group to our offices to sort, count and roll more than $1700 in donated coins from Lakeside Mall. Then they moved on to help clean a new build located in Clinton Township. Thank you for your partnership and volunteerism!

St. Mark Lutheran brought this volunteer group to Eastpointe to finish up three rehab projects at the end of June. Thank you for giving back to your community!

Volunteer News

We had lots of groups volunteer with us in June, working all across the county. Groups include Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and Tweddle Group (pictured below), other groups volunteering with us include Michigan Real Estate Masterminds, SRG Global, and Member Driven Technologies.  We appreciate their energy and enthusiasm, pitching in wherever needed.

On Monday, June 19, 33 volunteers from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services rolled up their sleeves, donned safety glasses and special suits to assist Macomb Habitat with the construction of two Clinton Township-based homes.

The volunteer project was part of the company’s fifth-annual Week of Caring blitz. This is the third year that Mercedes-Benz Financial Services has supported Macomb Habitat during Week of Caring.

Tweddle Group has been volunteering with Macomb Habitat since 2012. This is their first volunteer day on a build site, with three more scheduled throughout 2017.

Volunteer of the Month

This month we highlight the behind the scenes efforts that make it possible for many of our corporate teams to join us. Stephen Park, from Mercedes Benz Financial Corp. is a great example, in his company’s third year of volunteering with us. He recruited an enthusiastic and willing team of 33 to help on five different projects in Clinton Twp., advocating for us as employees chose where they wanted to serve during MBFS’s Week Of Caring. He handled lots of details, answered many questions, and marshalled a good lunch for everyone involved. Thanks, Steve!

Volunteer Opportunities

Our ReStores Need Your Help!

Need community service hours or just want to give back to help Macomb Habitat? We need more volunteers each day in our two ReStore locations to help move stock, organize, unload donations, and interact with customers. You can set your hours, but it is helpful to have blocks of time 4 hours or more. Once a week? Once a month? A block of several days? Store hours are Tuesday - Friday, 10 am- 6 pm, Saturdays 10 am - 5 pm. Stop in and the staff can orient you. Just sign a volunteer insurance waiver and you are ready to go. You can share with the staff what hours you have available and when you expect you can help out, so they can know when to expect your energy and smile.

Our ReStores sell donated household goods, building supplies, cabinets and other products so the public can more affordably remodel their home, providing funds for our affiliate to keep operating. So your volunteer hours translate into more homes built for Macomb County families to purchase.

We especially need help in July and August, starting now.

If you have a group that might want to volunteer, email Dave Tirsell at dtirsell@macombhabitat.org, so we can keep you informed. If you are an interested individual, stay tuned for the slots we will have each work day for people like you.
