NEW USES FOR OUR CHURCH BUILDING?

Your vestry is looking at ideas for sharing our new church home with others, i.e. Bible study, AA, Girl Scouts.  If you have ideas for ways that we might do this or would like to get involved in starting a group, please let Rev. Laurie know by leaving a message at 771-4168, or by emailing her at [email protected].
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN & WOMEN!

With St. Catherine's new church home and building, we're looking for people interested in helping to care for our building and furnishings.  We want to bring together a ministry team to maintain a hospitable space to meet and worship for our members and for those who have not yet found the St. Catherine's community.

If you think you could lend a hand with some minor repairs or maintenance, light cleaning, rosebush care, etc., please contact Junior Warden Shelby Thistlewhite, at 750-7632. Thank you!

Rev. Laurie's Message

Here we are a few days into summer, contemplating travel, vacations and some much needed re-creation.  Many in our congregation are traveling, with very special destinations and experiences planned along the way.  We wish all safe and enjoyable travels.

For many at St. Catherine's, our summer travels will have us visiting family and friends in far-off places, bringing our own kind of ministry to those we encounter.  We're called to spread the Good News through our baptism.  You may have heard the term "Ministry of All the Baptized (MOAB)."  This refers to the commitment made by us, or for us, at our baptism to be Christ's hands and feet in the world and to serve Christ in the world.  In the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church is unique in adding five baptismal vows to the six traditional vows taken at our baptism.

These vows specifically talk about our ministry as baptized Christians.  "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread and in the prayers?"  "Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?"  "Will you proclaim by word and example, the Good News of God in Christ?"  "Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?"  "Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?"  In short: come to church; try not to sin, but if you do, repent; let your words and actions mark you as a follower of Jesus; serve others; strive for justice and peace.  That's MOAB!  And ... our work is to be Moabites!

As you travel about in the coming months, either to faraway or nearby places, or even within the confines of Reno, remember that we are each Moabites.  We are each called, by way of our baptismal vows, to seek and serve Christ in all persons.  It is we -- each of us -- who spread the Good News.  We may be the only glimpse someone has of Jesus today.

July 22: Group Nature Hike

By Charlie Dickinson

Enjoy a short walk or hike to see some of the local countryside and get some exercise with St. Catherine's.   Our first walk/hike of 2017 is scheduled for Saturday morning, July 22.  We will meet at the Starbucks adjacent to the Raley's on Mount Rose highway (18250 Wedge Parkway) at 9 a.m.

The plan is to walk along one of the Galena area trails (Galena Creek, Whites Creek or Thomas Creek) depending on what the group is up for.  We will probably walk 2-4 miles, but it will depend on who joins us and how far they want to walk.  All are welcome (including any 4-pawed friends that you want to bring).   Please make sure to bring water and you might want to bring a snack for yourself and hiking poles are always a help.

We hope to see you on Saturday, July 22!

If you have any questions, please contact Charlie Dickinson ([email protected]).

July is School Supplies Month

kids_with_art_supplies.jpg By Sally Dickinson

It's hard to believe, but school will be starting again on August 7 for most of the students at Double Diamond. The fourth track will begin September 5. This year we will again be asking for donation to purchase supplies for our Partner in Education. Last year we realized that teachers and students have specific needs during the year based on today's teaching methods. We asked the teachers at Double Diamond to prioritize the top 5 supplies they use and need throughout the year.  Here are the top four in order of priority (these supplies were very much appreciated last year by the teachers):
  • Dry-Erase Markers
  • Glue Sticks
  • Highlighters
  • Post-it Notes
My goal is to collect monetary donations totaling $1,000.  That is about $1 per student.

There is a bulletin board up in the entrance hall of the church for this project. If you want to donate funds for this project, there will be envelopes you can use to put your donation in the collection plate. Please write your name on the envelope if you would like your donation to be included in your annual statement of giving.

Please return all donations by July 30, the 5th Sunday in July . We will then get the supplies ready for the teachers and students by the first day of school.

Thank you in advance for all your help with this project.  I know the teachers, students and staff at Double Diamond greatly appreciate our help and generosity. AND if you are interested in becoming a 360blueprint Mentor, or just volunteering in the classroom, please contact Sally Dickinson or Amy Heintz. It is amazing what a great difference in a child's life just an hour a week can have. No special talents needed, just a willingness to be there.

St Catherine's 2017 Galilee Retreat

We are fortunate to have reserved a summer weekend on the lake! Please join your St. Catherine's friends from August 11-13 at Galilee Episcopal Camp and Retreat Center, for both active and not-so-active fun. You will be able to choose from hiking, kayaking, walking the labyrinth, or relaxing in front of a fabulous view of the lake. Evening activities include a campfire, board games, cards or just visiting with friends -- new and old.

To top it off, every meal served at Galilee is healthy and delicious. The retreat will start with dinner on Friday night and end with Sunday lunch. All ages are welcome! The cost for the weekend is $152 for ages 12 and older, and $114 for children 3 to 11. There is a sign-up sheet in our entry area, and we're asking for a deadline of July 30 to register your interest.

Newborn
Baby Bundles:  S haring Our Blessings with Others

By Ann Crase

Baby Bundles is composed of and supported by members of St. Catherine's and Trinity Episcopal Churches.  With items donated by both congregations, we assemble "Bundles" of  layette items for St. Mary's and Renown hospitals. They are then distributed by hospital staff to disadvantaged new parents who have little or nothing for their newborn.

CURRENT NEEDS
  • Plain white onesies
  • Girls' receiving blankets
  • Boys' summer hats
  • Girls' and boys' bibs
  • All unisex clothing, especially hats & pants
Any help with these items would be greatly appreciated. Clothing should be between 0 and 6 months. Thanks to the generosity of Linda Rosenthal we have enough diapers and wipes to last the next 2-3 months. I'll let everyone know when our supply starts running short.

Monetary donations are always welcome, too. (We'll shop for yo u!) God Bless!

If you have any questions, please contact Susan Lombardi at 329-2044 or Ann Crase at 356-1155.
