60 Businesses Assisted and 259 Jobs Saved!

The Valley Economic Alliance (TVEA) successfully closed its 2016-2017 fiscal year and Layoff Aversion program!

TVEA's business assistance team personally met with and assisted 69 financially stressed businesses within the Los Angeles region and saved 259 jobs through its 2016-2017 Layoff Aversion program.

For the past six years, TVEA has joined forces with the Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation to provide businesses confidential and complimentary consultations and connect and refer them to helpful resources and services through it's layoff aversion and business assistance program. This work is performed via contracts with the County and City of Los Angeles, saving thousands of local jobs per year.

Success Story
Kenny Broderick, from TVEA's Business Assistance team, assisted Roschell Ashley, CEO of New Horizons. During their consultation, Roschell expressed concerns with the new regulations on minimum wage increases and restructuring their assembly facility, which would result in a loss of 125 employees. Roschell also shared her goal to take New Horizons to a higher level of success and acquire a different income stream by supplementing funding from grants and donations to becoming more self sufficient through their cookie manufacturing and distribution operation where individuals with disabilities are taught hands-on food preparation, and reducing expenses through cost containment recommendations.

New Horizons has a unique business model that empowers individuals with special needs to fulfill their dreams. Through partnerships, community education, and advocacy, they create a brighter future in which their clients are accepted by, participate in, and add value to the community.

Kenny worked with Roschell to prioritize her challenges and immediately provided resources to help her business. Manager of Field Operations, Chris Marocchi, of California Manufacturing Technology Consultant provided her with marketing, distribution, and labor cost analysis for their cookie operation. Karla Perez, Branch Manager of Horizon Personnel Services, guided her with collaborative workforce solutions and job placement issues. Spin Mlynarik of Black Market Gelato also helped Roschell create a plan to distribute cookies on a bigger scale such as Albertson's, Ralph's, Pavilion's, as well as improve packaging.

These resources helped New Horizons develop a more efficient business plan, improve job placement, and discover new distribution channels to improve the production processes. She was able to retain 125 of her staff, and continues to work on her cookie operation while making New Horizons as successful as possible.

Minimum Wage going up in many SoCal Cities

Many Southern California workers received a pay raise, as the legal minimum wage increased in Los Angeles and some other local cities.

The current minimum wage of $10.50 will increase to $12 an hour in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Malibu, Santa Monica and in unincorporated LA County communities.

The change is part of an eventual hike to reach $15 an hour by 2020.

The change applies to businesses with 26 or more employees.

For those with 25 or fewer employees, the minimum wage goes from $10 to $10.50.

Kenn Phillips with The Valley Economic Alliance says an increase may sound good to workers, but it could negatively impact some of them.
He says a study that tracked Seattle's minimum wage increase shows businesses compensated to make up for the increased costs.

"What they did was they contracted and part of the contraction was giving employees 9 percent less hours of work to make up the difference in the added expense," Phillips said.

Robert MacMurray, owner of  Robbie Mac Pizza,  said he may have to make some adjustments to his business after costs go up, but he thinks the increase is deserved.

"I think it's fair," he said. "It's very expensive - housing and food and everything goes up every year, so it needs to happen."
