Hundreds Flock to Terrebonne Parish Coastal Day

Floodgates, levees, barrier islands and wetlands were the talk of the town on June 27 as hundreds of local residents, nonprofit organizations and government agencies gathered at the Houma Civic Center for
Terrebonne Parish Coastal Day.
"It was a tremendous opportunity for us to tell the story of the
Morganza Action Coalition
, what we do, and the levee projects we are fighting for, as well as to hear our neighbors share their concerns about levee protection and coastal restoration," explains
MAC President Jay Walker who represented the organization at the event.
"We all love this community we call home and are passionate about making sure it lives on for many, many years to come. I think that's what Coastal Day is all about," he says.

Just in time for Coastal Day, MAC published a new brochure detailing our expanded focus, recent achievements, and progress on Morganza to the Gulf.

Coastal Master Plan is Approved
Morganza and other Terrebonne and Lafourche projects are included in state's 50-year restoration and protection plan.
|
The 2017 Legislative Session ended with very good news for coastal residents like us - the Louisiana Legislature approved the
2017 Coastal Master Plan, clearing the way for an estimated $50 billion in prioritized protection and restoration projects to proceed as state funds become available.
The 50-year state plan includes the construction levees and floodgates along the Morganza to the Gulf alignment, the Houma Navigation Canal Lock Complex, levee projects in Lafourche, and marsh creation, sediment diversion, and barrier island restoration along the Terrebonne and Lafourche coast.

Hurricane protection has come a long way since last year for Terrebonne Parish, when the Morganza-to-the-Gulf levee system had a few gaps in it between Dularge and Pointe-aux-Chenes.
Now, the levee system is a small section away from filling the openings. The section on Falgout Canal Road has a small gap, said Terrebonne Parish President Gordy Dove, but it is expected to be raised to 12-and-a-half feet by the end of June.

The Morganza Action Coalition is a 501(c)(4) corporation founded in 2006 by Terrebonne Parish residents and business leaders who recognize the importance of the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System to the continued survivability, economic viability and growth of our region. Today, MAC advocates for comprehensive levee protection for Terrebonne & Lafourche Parishes.
MAC relies on financial contributions from local businesses and individuals to support these advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. and in Baton Rouge, as well as to fund outreach and communication activities to gain public support for the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection System and levee projects in North and South Lafourche.
