 Moose sightings in Grand Forks are soon to spike with plans to open a Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli in Fall of 2017. Located at 623 S. Washington St, at the corner of Demers Ave & Washington St., this will be the fifth Smiling Moose in North Dakota. A group of mountain loving friends opened the first Smiling Moose in Edwards, Colorado in 2003, and over the years the fast casual restaurant concept has steadily grown in seven states including Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota.

Williston's economy continues to improve.
The most recent Economic Outlook report shows May 2017 enplanements and hotel occupancies are up compared to one year ago.
Williston Airport manager Anthony Dudas said commercial airline boardings have increased modestly; a welcome sign after a two-year decline.
"We have seen sustainable growth during the last two months," said Dudas. "The boarded passenger traffic and oil industry are rebounding and we are seeing an upswing." Read More

Some producers are hesitant about growing a canola crop because it does not have a relationship with soil fungi, or in scientific lingo, the plant is not mycorrhizal.
The term refers to fungal filaments in soil, which become extensions of the root system. Though it has not been well-studied, it is a symbiosis that benefits both plant and long-term soil health. There may be ways, however, to have your canola and mycorrhiza, too, and that is among things a Williston Research Extension Center interseeding project is just beginning to explore. Cropping specialist Dr. Clair Keene will be talking about inter-seeded demonstration plots at the research farm at the upcoming MonDak Ag Showcase Field Days, set for 8:30 a.m. July 13 and 14.

Drought continues; Glasgow reports driest Three-Month Period since 1918

The U.S. Drought Monitor weekly update issued Thursday increased the percentage of North Dakota acres rated as being in extreme drought. The Drought Monitor now says 29.3 percent of the state is in extreme drought. That compares with 25 percent a week earlier.
"Areas of severe drought and extreme drought expanded across eastern Montana, south-central North Dakota and northwestern South Dakota where hot and dry conditions persisted," says the Monitor.

The Frontier Museum in Williston has collected buildings and artifacts dating as far back as the late 1800s. Some of the furniture on display has been loaned to the local community theatre. Now, the museum which has donated to other organizations, is looking for its own community support. "I really do feel like the community will respond once they know there's a need. And once they see what it is they're protecting out here," says Darin Henderson, Williams County Historical Society board president. Read More

Standing tall at the center of the splash pad that opened in Crosby last summer is the "water whoosh," the 20-foot high bucket that drenches visitors with up to 10 gallons per minute. But for younger kids, like those who were present at the 3 p.m. hour on Thursday, the smaller, in-ground sprays along the edge of the pad allow for a less intimidating place to get soaked. "This is the third time this year we've been here," said Allison Raggio, as her son, Brody, who celebrated his first birthday earlier in the week, crawls in front of the sprays. Raggio said she was not aware of the 1 percent city sales tax, split between Crosby's Park Board and Community Center. The tax is up for a renewal vote on Tuesday, July 18. She said she sees value in having that sort of public funding for parks and recreation.

 The North Dakota Public Service Commission (PSC) will hold a public hearing in Watford City on Friday, July 14, regarding a proposal to expand the existing Wild Basin Gas Plant in McKenzie County. Oasis Midstream Services LLC has submitted an application for a permit to expand the capacity of its existing Wild Basin Gas Plant and Crude Handling Facility from 80 million standard cubic feet per day of gas processing to add an additional 265 million standard cubic feet per day (gross capacity of 345 million standard cubic feet per day). Estimated cost of the project is $140 million. Read More

US still relies heavily on Fossil Fuels for Energy Consumption

 The rapid expansion of wind and solar power in the U.S. can often obscure another reality: the country still leans heavily on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have been the dominant source for energy consumption for more than a century, and in 2016 they accounted for 81 percent of all energy use -- the lowest percent of fossil fuel use in the past 100 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Petroleum remains the fuel used most in homes and businesses, and petroleum consumption has increased every year since 2012.
