Our commitment: teaming up to support all students
As our schools settle into a new year, it's a good time to reflect and reaffirm Folsom Cordova's shared values that create physically and emotionally safe learning environments.

Our schools foster the safety, success, and wellness of all students by creating a positive school culture that celebrates the power of diversity and differences. That means our schools, students, families, and employees will treat each other with respect, and refuse to tolerate behavior that causes harm.

Hateful and discriminatory actions or words - which target a person's actual or perceived race, ethnicity, culture, heritage, gender, sex, sexual orientation, immigration status, socioeconomic status, physical/mental attributes, or religious beliefs or practices - will not be tolerated in our schools.

What our schools can do: Folsom Cordova educators will lead by example and continue to proactively implement character education and social-emotional learning programs that model and reward kindness, empathy, and positive behavior. Our professional mental health providers will provide support to improve student well-being. And our schools will immediately investigate bullying or harassment of any kind.

What families and community members can do: It takes all of us working together to create welcoming, inclusive school communities. Communication - with your child, and with adults on school campuses - is the most critical way to help. If you see or hear something that could be a bullying issue, it's important that you speak up and tell someone.  Often, bullying issues can be resolved by talking with teachers or the principal. Additionally, all school websites have an online reporting form for suspected bullying or harassment.

Spring testing scores coming: Learn how to understand reports
Folsom Cordova families of students who were in grades 3-8 or 11 last year will soon receive the individual score reports for their students under the state's new testing system.  These scores are one tool designed to help teachers better understand how our students are performing under new state standards, measure student growth, and implement effective learning strategies tailored to individual children.

Families, students, and community members may have many questions about how to read these score reports, and what the results mean.

Please visit www.fcusd.org/testing, where we have provided answers to common questions and additional resources for you to help support your child's learning.

Solar eclipse: Safety information for our families
On Monday, Aug. 21, the Sacramento region will be treated to a partial solar eclipse between 9-11:45 a.m. Many of our schools and teachers have recognized the remarkable learning opportunity available and are planning eclipse-related activities with students.

The safety of our students is our number one priority, and our schools understand that staring at even a sliver of the sun without adequate eye protection can cause permanent eye damage. Schools will be sending home permission slips this week should any of them be planning eclipse-related activities.

Schools that will be hosting activities that involve directly viewing the eclipse outside will provide industry standard solar eclipse glasses. Parents are welcome to send their children to school with personal viewing glasses, but make sure that they meet basic proper safety viewing standards.  Alternative eclipse viewing methods, such as pinhole projection, are also permitted at school and do not require safety glasses - but will require parent permission.

Here are some helpful resources for safe eclipse viewing:
Some schools may choose to move their recess indoors or reschedule later in the day. If you have specific questions about your child's plans during the eclipse, please contact your school.

Meal applications: Help increase funding for your school!

Folsom Cordova is asking our families to apply for free and reduced school meals - even if they're not sure they'll use it.

Why?  Because those applications could increase the amount of money your school receives to pay for resources that help students:  academic coaches, technology, musical instruments, field trips and more!

Schools receive more money and resources based on the number of families who qualify for free and reduced meals - regardless of whether they decide to use the program or not.
