A Message from our President

Summer months are often accompanied by exciting trips and fun opportunities to break out of the routine, but we know our members continue to work hard all summer long amidst the fun and sun. Our staff spends this time prepping for the many programs and networking opportunities we have coming up for you in the fall.

Every year, we look forward to hosting the Malcolm Baldrige Awards Evening, honoring three individuals in our community who have gone above and beyond to make their impact. As you may have seen in previous announcements, this year's dinner will honor Frank Monteiro of MacDermid Performance Solutions with the 2017 Malcolm Baldrige Community Award; Lori DosSantos, CRPC, with Bank of America Merrill Lynch with our 2017 Leadership Award; and James Higgins of Webster Bank with the 2017 Volunteer Award. We anticipate a large crowd to help us celebrate these three community leaders on September 26 at the Aqua Turf Club, and are currently accepting reservations , sponsorships and silent auction items.

Another large undertaking for the Chamber every summer is the production of our annual Membership Directory and Resource Guide, slated to be released in mid-September. We are once again partnering with the Republican-American newspaper to publish your business information to 30,000 newspaper subscribers and give you maximum exposure. The team at the Republican-American has a wealth of advertising opportunities  for this publication for any size business and are ready to assist in getting your promotion in the book. Please reach out to them to take advantage of this opportunity.

In the meantime, there are a few fantastic networking opportunities coming up, including the July Out for Business at Quassy Amusement Park tomorrow as well as our August Out for Business and the annual YPOWR Mini-Golf Tournament in September.

As always, please reach out to me if I can be of service to you or your business at (203) 757-0701 or at  [email protected].

Best Regards,
Lynn Signature

HR Corner: "Vacation and Other Types of Time Off"
Yay, it's Summertime - everyone has time to go on vacation, or do they? Many people work in different organizations have many ways for time off to be granted.  Some paid - some not.  Let's look at some different types of time off and what they mean!

1.    Vacation - used for time off for fun - usually must be scheduled to be taken - Paid

2.    Personal - used for unexpected time off for anything personal - Paid

3.    Floating Holidays - Days that are granted like holidays - not scheduled - Paid

4.    Holidays - usually scheduled on the calendar for all - Paid

5.    Sick Days (in CT we have paid sick leave) - come up unexpectedly

6.    PTO - (Paid Time Off) some organizations lump all the types of time off into one and call it PTO

7.    Bereavement - Needed if a family member dies (paid or not-depending on Org.)

8.    Jury Duty - In CT you must be paid for the 1st 5 days of Jury service by your employer - afterward, Judicial Dept. pays something, org. may also.

9.    Worker's Compensation Leave (for an injury/illness) - payment determined by Worker's Comp. Commissioner based on injury/illness

10.   Leave of Absence - Unpaid -your choice and have no time allotted to you
11.   FMLA - no time allotted to you and have passed regulations for FMLA or CTFMLA - Unpaid
12.   Military Leave - Must be allowed to take time off, but will not be paid by company, but will be paid by military service

If you would like more information about this subject and how to administer these - there will be a blog coming shortly from KardasLarson, discussing this very subject!
