Reflections for Worship . . .

Help From Unlikely Places
Matthew 15:21-28

The story of the Canaanite woman is painful to listen to - the idea that the person who reveals to us a loving, compassionate God sounding anything but loving and compassionate! The writers here in Matthew are demonstrating the special connection between Jesus and the Jewish community - and the human tendency of Jesus and others to understand their purpose in life and their God in a singular way. Have you ever learned something important from a comment that someone made to you that was so direct or hurtful that you backed up? At times in our life, as well as our faith, we can be confronted with challenges that we are not prepared for - but that does not make the challenge any less important or truthful! In a sermon entitled "Help From Unlikely Places", we will consider how to acknowledge and receive help that comes from places and persons we may least expect! Come join us for worship in the Chapel at 10AM!

Connie Washburn is away this week and we have Sage
McLeish as our guest musician covering for Connie, along with vocalist Kim Mendez-McLeish.

Small Group on Spiritual Practices

Many of the topics of our recent small groups have been focused on social justice issues. We also recognize the need to ground ourselves in our daily and weekly spiritual practices to sustain us, whether in our work for social justice or in dealing with the daily challenges of life.
You are invited to spend time with a small group as we work through a book on spiritual practices entitled,  Mudhouse Sabbath: an Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline (study edition) by Lauren F. Winner. The author is a convert to Christianity and has
deep roots in Judaism, so the book is a reflection on the best of Jewish
spiritual practices that might also be life-giving for Christians.

We will try out these spiritual practices together over 4 sessions beginning
Wednesday July 19th, meeting every other Wednesday
evening from 6:30-8. Please let Andy know if you are interested.
