CREW helps those considering relocation in retirement examine all their options carefully and make an informed decision about this major life transition.
Dear OLLI Members,
Remember that we will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Also remember that on July 12, 13 and 14 the UNC system Board of Governors and chancellors from all of UNC system schools will be meeting in the Reuter Center and on the UNC Asheville campus.  College for Seniors summer courses were built with this schedule in mind.

Take some time to read Larry Hamilton's story on John Himmelheber, who contributes to OLLI and Asheville in many impressive ways.

Note that the College for Seniors is planning sessions to introduce people to the joys of teaching in College for Seniors and also wants to know about your expertise using various presentation software.

We hope you are enjoying what is turning out to be a beautiful summer here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. One of the great joys of summer is the opportunity to hear a variety of music.  Please see information about Concerts on the Quad, Shindig on the Green and late night jazz.  You can also enjoy Stories on Asheville's Front Porch and a trip to the Cataloochee Valley led by author Wayne Caldwell.  During our recent Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend, I noted that all of our panelists who talk about their relocation choices talked about "pinching themselves" to see if life in Western North Carolina were more than a dream.  While we know that our community is undergoing growing pains and has unique economic challenges, there are indeed many reasons to celebrate life in our mountains.

With respect for all that you do to model creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Buncombe County Aging Survey

Every five years Buncombe County's Commissioners adopt a plan for improvement of older adult services in our community. Several OLLI members serve on the Aging Coordinating Consortium, which makes recommendations for this plan. At the outset of this process they ask you to spend a few minutes giving your advice about issues you believe need attention in this next plan. Certainly you have opinions about this subject; now is the time to share them! John Himmelheber: writer, teacher, guitarist, friend

by Larry L. Hamilton

It is not a cliche that Baltimore native John Himmelheber was born to write, teach writing, and occasionally  play a little guitar among friends for charitable causes. He and his wife Virginia are usually found on Sundays helping feed the homeless at Pritchard Park in downtown Asheville.  His compulsion to read, write, and tell stories became obvious around age 12. The fire still burns.
