This Sunday is the 6th Sunday after Pentecost and The Rev. Ernie Boyer will be presiding over the 8:00 am and the 10:00 am services. We loved having Father Ernie at St. Stephens 2 weeks ago and look forward to seeing him again.
Last night, the vestry had their monthly meeting. Please scroll down the Friday Journal to find a summary report of the vestry meeting.
Just a reminder that the Golf Tournament is coming up on August 28, 2017. Please mark your calendars. You have the choice of playing golf and coming for the dinner that evening, or if you are not a golfer, like me, or cannot golf that day, you can still come for the fantastic dinner that evening. We always have a lot of fun and the food is tasty and the music is awesome. We can even set up carpools if anyone needs a ride.
Please keep the vestry and the Rector Search Committee in your prayers. The vestry is working hard to keep St. Stephen's operating smoothly and the Rector Search Committee is working hard to create our church profile. Please pray that God will guide us all and that we will have open hearts and minds as we make decisions for the church during this transition.
Reminders:
Please bring in dry food for the Food Basket for St. Julie's and pocket change for the Food for the Poor Jar.
Please look at the Angel's Board to see if there are any tasks that need to be added or tasks that you want to volunteer to do.
Also, remember Andy Lief is putting together a list of tasks that need to be done for the Beautification of St. Stephen's Project. Please let him know if you have tasks to add.

Voice Choir
by Genie Lee, Music Director
I have greatly enjoyed being the Voice Choir Director for the past 4 years. The voice choir members are very dedicated and talented people and have been an inspiration to me. Because I am Senior Warden and we are going through a transition, I have more responsibilities now, along with commitments in my personal life, and so, sadly, I need to step down as the Voice Choir Director. My plan is to practice with the voice choir in November/December 4 times to get ready to sing for the Christmas Eve service and then again in the Spring 4 times to prepare to sing for Easter Sunday. I want to invite anyone who wants to sing with us for Christmas and/or Easter, to attend the short-term practices. There will be more in future articles regarding practice dates and times.
If there is anyone in the congregation that would like to take over as the Voice Choir Director full time, please let me know.
Thank you,
Genie Lee

T
hank you, Genie, for your expert direction and dedication to our Voice Choir for four years. The preludes and anthems of our Choir under your direction raised our worship to a heavenly level. We look forward to Christmas and Easter.

Highlights from the July 13 Vestry Meeting
by Donna Yamamura
Following are highlights from the Vestry meeting of July 13:
Preschool - Director Sue Nielsen reported that we still have openings for this Fall. Office staff will continue efforts to distribute information about enrollment in the community via Next Door, post cards, emails to parents of former students, and an article in Along the King's Highway. Meet the Teacher Day is Friday, August 18, with classes beginning the week of August 21.
Search Committee - Search Committee Co-Chair Ann Little reported that the committee is working well together and that Diocesan Consultant Joanna Shreve has been very helpful in working with them. They meet again this Saturday and are on target to present what they have to the Vestry soon.
Painting the Building - The Vestry has received a bid to paint the building exterior this summer. Two color options were presented. Renderings of both options are available in the church office. Option A was selected by the Vestry.
Treasurer's Report - July finance reports for both the church and the preschool were presented. Pledges are behind slightly as of June 30. The Gift Card Program has netted $1,000 for the church operating fund year to date. Facility Use fees - mostly piano recitals - were high for the month of June. Both finance reports were received and will be filed for audit.
Bible Study - Edy Unthank reported that she will offer a bible study on Parables beginning September 12th through October 24th on Tuesday mornings. Talk to Edy to sign up for the morning course or to let her know if you are interested in an evening session.
Neighborhood Watch - Edy is working to organize a Neighborhood Watch presentation by San Jose Police Department for surrounding neighborhoods. More information will be available as the details are finalized.
Episcopal Relief Development Fund & Five Wishes Program -- Deacon Robin presented two programs for consideration. She will communicate details of both programs to the congregation. The Episcopal Relief Development Fund helps people in need around the globe as well as in the United States in a variety of ways. We can support their efforts with a special collection on the 5th Sunday of each month. Watch for details in the near future. The Five Wishes Program helps individuals with end of life planning - advance directives, documenting emergency contacts as well as personal preferences for funeral arrangements, etc. The vestry will poll the congregation to determine if a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday after coffee hour would be most convenient for a presentation.

SANTA MARIA URBAN MINISTRIES
(SMUM)
Back-to-School Drives Through July 31
This year
SMUM is asking for monetary donations to support children who are returning to school in the fall. They have two programs:
SHOES FOR SOULS:
$25 buys a child new shoes
Every child likes to start school with a new pair of shoes, but many families simply cannot afford them. Donate to "Shoes for Souls" and help one child.
IT ALL ADDS UP: $20 buys a child a scientific calculator
Or support a high school student by giving to their "It All Adds Up" drive, and provide $20 for a scientific calculator.
You may write a check to St. Stephen's with "Shoes" or "Calculators" in the memo line and we will pass the funds through to SMUM in your name.
Or, you may donate directly to SMUM online at

We trust you and we know that you will bring us the best possible Rector for St. Stephen's as you have done for us before. Thank you, Heavenly Father for all your blessings on the Search Committee and this congregation.

GIFT CARD PROGRAM...
by Janet Thorsrud
Hey my friends,
The next order will be Aug 6th. Anything you want to order for gift baskets being used for the golf tournament you can order now or in August.
There are 3 gift cards left in the office. They are:
2 $25 Amazon cards
1 $25 Olive Garden/ Red Lobster
This option of having cards in the office seems to no longer be of use and will be discontinued. The office staff will love not having to keep track of this.
Don't forget you can buy plane tickets and pay for hotels while you're on vacation this summer.
Stay cool!
