From Garden to Table - preserving with Françoise Piron

Got more fruit than you can possibly eat?

Have you inherited some Fowlers Vacola jars or even a preserving kit and would like to know if they are still usable?

Come along and learn from Françoise, how you can preserve the m sugar-free to use over the months to come.
In this workshop we will be showing you the basic information you will need to preserve mostly fruit in this tried and tested Australian preserving technique. Once preserved the jars do not need refrigeration - just a nice dark space - making them the perfect symbol of Plastic Free and Waste Free living.

Françoise Piron
Françoise has been preserving fruit, including tomatoes, and some vegetables for over 15 years and has been showing friends in her local community how to make the most of the Fowlers Vacola technique. Françoise accesses produce from her own garden, from the West Croydon Fruit and Veggie Swap and by scouring every opportunity that comes her way. She makes sure that she eats all the produce she preserves. "Never let a good fruit rot" is one of her mottos.

One lucky attendee will win a pack to get them started on their preserving journey!

Special feature for the night - Boomerang Bags. This grassroots, community driven organisation is tackling plastic pollution at its source.

Natives in the spotlight: Sclerantus pungens (Prickly Knawel)

Scleranthus (the knawels) are a herbaceous plant in the carnation family.

Did you know?
Sclerathus is one of the 38 plants used by Bach flower practitioners. Keep in mind no scientific research exists to suggest that these plants can cure any diseases.

Scleranthus pungens (Prickly Knawel) is so named from the Latin, pungens meaning sharply pointed, because of the sharp pungent ends to the leaves.

It grows to about 30cm and it's flowers are a small, white with a light green centre. It usually flowers between August and October.

It is common in South Australia in drier climates, usually in sandy soil and rocky places. It is a very rare plant in the Mount Lofty Ranges and less than ten plants are found in the City of Marion on a steep coastal cliff face. The populations at our coastal reserve are being protected by the wonderful work of Bush for Life, who have a site in the area that removes weed threats. If you have a keen eye you will be able to spot this plant when out along our Coastal Walk.

Water Sensitive Urban Design in Your Home - FREE event

In this session you'll learn from two local experts Dan French (French Enviro) and Melissa Bradley (Water Sensitive SA) about how to apply WSUD in and around your home to help reduce offsite storm water impacts, provide cooling during extreme heat, improve the health of your garden, minimise environmental degradation, improve aesthetic and recreational appeal and reduce potable water consumption (saving money).

This is a Resilient South session and open to residents from Onkaparinga, Holdfast Bay, Marion and Mitcham Councils.

When: Thursday 31 August, 6:30pm -9pm

Where: Mitcham Cultural Village, 103 Princes Road, Mitcham

Garden to Table: for single parent families

Marion Uniting Church is offering a program Garden to Table for single parent families to come together once a fortnight, to grow food, cook and share a meal together. This program has been created by a small group of both single parents and other members of Marion Uniting Church.

Garden to Table gives single parents an opportunity to gather with others in similar life circumstances and have conversations over cooking a meal together. While parents are cooking, their children can partake in activities or receive after-school homework support. The group finishes with everyone sitting down and sharing the meal together.

Our goal is to increase positive attitudes, knowledge, confidence (skills) towards gardening and cooking for single parents and their children, as well as increase the community capacity for healthy living.

For more information about the program, please contact Aimee Chen on 0420 432 166 or email [email protected]

When:
Wednesdays fortnightly during school term, 4:00pm-6:00pm.
Specific dates: Aug 9th, 23rd & Sept 6th, 20th
