| Familiar New Faces at St. John's |
| Scott Bradley to Lead Youth Group |
Hi! I'm Scott Bradley and I will begin my time as Youth Leader at St. Johns on August 1st! Some of you at St. John's know me from growing up in the St. John's community where I attended church, church school and was active in the Youth Group. After my time at the Youth Group, and at an earlier age than most, I attended a few youth group trips as a "chaperone" for my older brothers (with parent of course)!
A little background about myself: I graduated from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Economics. When I am not at St. John's, I volunteer at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad and work for Metropolitan Hospitality group in DC. I am an avid soccer fan, enjoy card games, appreciate cheesy jokes, and am up for any outdoors activities.
I am excited to have the opportunity to return to the St. John's YG to help create a fun and inclusive space where youth can form friendships in a spiritual community. Also, I look forward to the privilege our YG has in its participation at CAMP JOY. I welcome your ideas and questions.

| Sonya Sutton to Serve as Interim Director of Music |
Beginning in September, Sonya Subbayya Sutton will step in as Interim Director of Music Ministries. (Many of you may remember Sonya, who served as substitute organist for Anne Timpane while she was on sabbatical last summer.)
Sonya is an organist, pianist, conductor and blogger. She has served as Music Director at several Episcopal Churches, including most recently at St. Alban's in Washington, D.C., where she led professional and volunteer musicians in five ensembles, wrote a weekly blog on music and faith, and founded a performing arts series, Arts@Midday, which attracted audiences with its innovative programming.
Sonya received her education at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, earning Bachelor and Master Degrees in Piano Performance, and a second Masters in Arts Administration. She is married to the Episcopal Bishop of Maryland, the Rt. Rev. Eugene Sutton and they have four children in their blended family.
Please welcome Sonya, whose first Sunday with us will be on September 3rd.

| Bishop Eugene Sutton to Preach on August 6th |
On Sunday, August 6th, St. John's is honored to have The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton preach at the 8 am, 10 am and 5 pm services.
The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton elected bishop of the Diocese of Maryland in 2008, is nationally known for his commitment to non-violence, reconciliation, the environment, and the practice of Centering Prayer. Formerly the Canon Pastor of Washington National Cathedral and Director of the Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage, Bishop Sutton has also served as a college chaplain, parish priest and professor at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. The author of several articles about spiritual practices and preaching, he's a sought-after guest preacher and a contributor to the book, The Diversity of Centering Prayer.

Farewell for Pamela Terry and Cynthia Grimes on
August 6th |
Please join us on Sunday August 6th as we say farewell and thank you to Pamela Terry, Children's Chapel Minister, and Cynthia Grimes, departing Youth Group Leader.
Pamela will be moving to New York in mid-August to pursue a Masters of Social Work at NYU.
Cynthia will be pursuing a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Science in Disaster, Resilience, and Leadership at Tulane.
Pamela and Cynthia will be recognized with a Liturgy of Departure during the 10 am service. Following the service, join us for lemonade and cake on the lawn, and a chance to convey your good wishes.

| Summer Schedule: Crossroads, Parish Office and Sunday Services |
Crossroads is published bi-weekly during the summer.
Weekly issues will resume on August 25th.
Deadline for submission is one week prior to the edition date.
Additionally, summer office hours through Labor Day are
Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm
.
And finally, the Sunday summer service schedule is as follows: 8am - Simple Spoken Holy Eucharist; 10am - Combined Holy Eucharist (no Church School); 5pm - "Come As You Are" Holy Eucharist. The regular schedule will resume on Sunday, September 17.

| Education for Ministry (EfM) |
Each Wednesday evening of the school year, a small group meets in St. John's lounge for supper, discussion, and theological reflection through the EfM program for laypersons offered by the Episcopal seminary at Sewanee, Tennessee. Students read and learn about the Bible, church history, and spiritual discernment. There is an annual enrollment fee of $375, but scholarships are available.

| Thank You for Making a Home for a Refugee Family |
As you know, less than two weeks ago, we were contacted by Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area and asked if we could set up an apartment for a family of 11 (yes, 11!) arriving on July 26 from Afghanistan. The family includes a father (45), mother (40) and 9 children ranging in ages from 3-21.
Without hesitation, St. John's parishioners and other volunteers jumped into action and made this happen. Over the course of a week, the donations arrived - couches, chairs, tables, bedding, food, cleaning supplies, toys, grocery store gift cards, toothpaste, lamps, rugs, flowers, Metro cards, bath linens, dishes, pots & pans, a lap top, stuffed animals and much more! The generosity was overwhelming!
The weekend of July 22nd we gathered items, delivered them to the apartment and a group prepared the home for the family's arrival on July 26th. Together we created a space that is warm & welcoming and will be so appreciated by our newest neighbors. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassion and partnership. You are a blessing!

On Sunday, August 20th at 5:45 pm, come and partake in a crab feast - crabs, corn and burgers! Sign up on the bulletin board or

. It's a great way to finish up the summer and enjoy the company of some great guys.
We provide the food and soft drinks, you provide your own beer and/or wine. Enjoy an evening of good food and company. All St. John's men and boys are invited.

| Water, Snacks & Activities Needed for Women's Shelter |
Every August, St. John's parishioners provide all of the meals for one week at the Interfaith Works Women's Shelter in Rockville. We were scheduled to do so again this August, but in June, the shelter's new building at 2 Taft Court became uninhabitable due to a severe construction deficiency. Temporarily, the shelter's 35 residents have moved into Progress Place (another Interfaith Works shelter) at 8106 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. Because of this move, the shelter's needs have changed for the summer. The shelter staff is asking for our help with the following:
- Could you provide individual-sized bottled water or non-perishable, packaged individual snacks, such as granola bars, nuts, or chips? While the women are living at Progress Place, there is not enough storage space or refrigeration there, so the shelter staff is collecting strictly non-perishable items in a room at 2 Taft Court in Rockville and moving them to Progress Place as needed. In addition, feminine hygiene products are always needed. If you can donate any such items, please drop them off at 2 Taft Court in Rockville or bring them to church on Sunday morning, August 6, 13, or 20, and St. John's Outreach Committee will deliver them.
- Could you host or lead an activity or entertainment, such as a bingo game with prizes, a beginners' tai chi class (without mats), a sing-along, art, craft, or ice cream social, one evening or weekend this summer at Progress Place? If so, please contact me at juliaandrews[A]netscape.net.

| Faith in Action on August 6th |
When the Faith in Action Group met in June, we decided to have a summer meeting just to catch up and re-group on where politically things are and who has been doing what, what new events or marches are coming up, etc.
Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 6 from 1:30 pm to 3 pm in the lounge at St. John's. I am hopeful you can join us.
We will not meet on the first Sunday in September (Labor Day weekend). Our next meeting will be October 1. In the meantime, if you have information you would like to share, just send an email to

| Bishop Curry Preaches During Union of Black Episcopalians Eucharist |
[Episcopal News Service - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania] Presiding Bishop Michael Curry preached at
African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas during a July 25 Eucharist commemorating the 225th anniversary of the black presence in the Episcopal Church. (View the video

"The child you save today may save you tomorrow," was Curry's refrain during the sermon. He called on people of faith and politicians, including President Donald Trump, to ensure a safe and secure future for all children.
The service was part of the
Union of Black Episcopalians'49th annual conference, held at a nearby Cherry Hill, New Jersey, hotel. The UBE met jointly for the first time with the
African Descent Lutheran Association and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton presided at the Eucharist.
