League speaker joins forum on local government rights

State governments are increasingly taking power away from local governments by passing laws that stop cities and counties from taking action on areas such as gun safety and minimum wages.

This panel discussion of community leaders will explore how to protect the rights of local communities.
  • When:Thursday, Aug. 3, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
  • Where: University/College Library at Broward College, 3501 Davie Road, Davie
  • What: Carol Smith of the Broward League will be on the panel. Experts and community leaders will talk about preemption laws, how they're being utilized by the Florida Legislature to undermine the rights of voters and local governments, and the corporate interests that are behind them.
  • Who: This event is co-hosted by the Campaign to Defend Local Solutions, The League of Women Voters of Broward County, LiUNA, SEIU Florida and Broward College. Sponsored by: Campaign to Defend Local Solutions. Free.
The program will open with an introduction from Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and will include:
  • Moderator - Monica Russo, State President of SEIU FL

  • Edward Labrador - Director Broward County Office of Intergovernmental Affairs
  • Matthew Land - Political Director, LiUNA SE Laborers Coalition
  • Vice Mayor Dan Daley, City of Coral Springs
The forum is FREE  and we are encouraging RSVPs. More info and free tickets here.
