Youth Program Expansion & New Leadership
Volunteers Needed - After School Program
LUM is excited to announce the expansion of the  After School Program, which starts next Tuesday, August 8.

With this expansion of enrollment comes an urgent need for volunteers.   ASP follows the Lafayette School Corporation's regular calendar. Volunteers are needed from 2 to 6 p.m. every weekday. Volunteers are needed to tutor, read to students, give spelling tests and supervise and monitor the children.

If interested please attend the Volunteer Training Session for all new and returning volunteers THIS  Saturday (August 5) from  6 to 8 p.m. at First Christian Church, Lafayette. The new After School Program leadership wants YOU to be a part of a program that's expanding and evolving in many exciting ways.

The LUM After School Program also needs  Bus Drivers  to pick up the children from school throughout the school year in a LUM Bus.

5th Quarter Program - Last Day is Tomorrow

As the first day of the new school year approaches, the teachers with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are confident that our students are better prepared than their peers to succeed. During this 10-week program, the trained staff create an academically stimulating environment for our students to learn during the summer months — which includes active learning, educational enrichment activities and study trips. During their final weeks of 5th Quarter, the students took one last study trip to Union Rack & Roll, the bowling alley at Purdue (pictured above). Ackerman Center Supports Immigration Clinic
Center Donates Books to LUM Citizenship Classes

LUM Immigration Clinic has partnered with the James F. Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship at Purdue University.

The director of the Ackerman Center, Dr. Phil VanFossen, and assistant director, Anne Murphy-Kline, generously donated teachers manuals, world maps, and 50 textbooks to the LUM Citizenship Classes. This donation will provide each student and each teacher their own books to use during the course. Additionally, Anne Murphy-Kline has been working with the volunteer teaching staff to provide a framework from which teachers can plan their lessons. The research-based methods will promote greater comprehension and retention of the course material. Last but not least, the Ackerman Center is enabling LUM to qualify for a USCIS Citizenship & Assimilation Grant, getting us closer to possibly receiving thousands of dollars in additional funding. Nancy Clark, the LUM Citizenship Classes volunteer coordinator, stated, "This partnership between the Ackerman Center and the Citizenship program at LUM will definitely facilitate the students' path to a successful completion of this program."
