A Message from the Executive Director

In this issue of our EPIC News, I'm pleased to provide a link to the 2016-2017 EPIC Annual Report . It was a challenging year, and required the contribution of many different staff members but it was a good year nonetheless!

This month we are navigating some personnel changes. First, I'd like to thank Gerry Simpson, who has been the EPIC Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the past 2 years. Gerry has been a source of great advice for our young entrepreneurs. Second, I congratulate Mike Spadotto in his new full-time Business faculty position at St Clair College. Over the next year, Mike will also continue to work with EPICentre on various entrepreneurial initiatives at EPIC Genesis. Finally, I'd like to welcome Cathy Mombourquette to our team.  Cathy will be working full-time on events and programming at the St. Clair College EPIC Genesis location.

I'm pleased to note that we have graduated 12 youth ventures from our 2017 RBC EPIC Summer Founders Program. More details on the Founders Pitch Competition held yesterday are included in this issue. We are currently advertising for the Fall Founders Program. Note that university co-op students can apply to the Fall program if they wish to start a business during their co-op term.

I'm anticipating a busy Fall - we have so many excellent events planned!!! Of course, close to my heart is our Enterprising Alumni Reception in Windsor on September 28, and I can now share this registration link with more information I hope to see you there!

I'd like to wish you a fun and relaxing Civic Holiday Weekend!!

2017 RBC EPIC Founders Pitch Day Results

The 2017 RBC EPIC Founders Program came to a close on August 2nd, 2017 with a Final Pitch Day. In the afternoon, each founder had the opportunity to showcase their Minimum Viable Products in a tradeshow-style setup at EPICentre. Guests were able to demo each innovation before the official pitch presentation session.

A big congratulations to all of our RBC EPIC Founders, who have been working hard on their startups over the summer!

An EPIC Thank You to our Entrepreneur-In-Residence Gerry Simpson

EPICentre would like to thank Gerry Simpson for his outstanding dedication as a business mentor here at the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre. Gerry was our Entrepreneur-In-Residence over the past 2 years, where he assisted with mentoring our members with respect to their startups! We would like to wish Gerry the best on his future endeavours.

The Social Enterprise Scene

Social Enterprise is a trending buzzword across the globe, with its own cluster growing right here in Windsor! With all of this social enterprise chatter, you may be asking yourself, 'What is social enterprise?' or 'How does social enterprise affect my business?' or even 'Why should I investigate whether I am a social enterprise or not?'. EPICentre, through our partnership with Pillar Nonprofit and Social Enterprise Southwest ( www.sesw.ca), has become a community hub for social enterprise information. We can answer the above questions for you and provide you with expertise, resources, and contacts that can support you through the development of your business.

Exciting opportunity! If you are a social entrepreneur that offers products or services relevant to event planning, the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, along with the Centre for Social Enterprise Development, are creating an online event planning directory for Ontario. If you wish to register for this list, please click here!

MEET OUR FOUNDERS

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and is also an obsession for many people around the globe. That is why it's a $265 billion industry globally and why one of EPICentre's newest founders is working on a brand new app for the industry!

Derrick Defor, a 4th year B.Comm student at the Odette School of Business, and his partner, Edem Francois (a Business Finance grad from York University), are now developing a platform dedicated to helping beauticians and stylists as well as consumers seeking their services.

People everyday struggle with how to keep themselves motivated, either at work or in their everyday lives, and sometimes you just need something more.

Emil Kais, a recent graduate of the Computer Science (Honours) Program at the University of Windsor, is currently putting together a new business venture that looks to focus on people, specifically on the different aspects of motivation.

MBA/JD grad creating centralized sponsorship platform

Vince Mazza, an Odette M.B.A. alum and recent graduate of the Dual J.D. program at the University of Windsor, is currently taking his experiences in sponsorship to the next level by developing Sponsrd, a sponsorship brokerage that will connect commercial properties with sponsors.

A Passion for Fashion

Tamarinn Murray, a 4th year Communications, Media & Film student at the University of Windsor, is taking her passion for fashion and turning it into a community-based platform, called Lit Fashion, where other fashion lovers can interact and share content.

She is currently working on an iOS app that will bring together the local and national community of fashion lovers. "Everyone is unique with their personal style, so I wanted to create something that can connect these individuals and celebrate individuality," said Tamarinn about her new venture.
