Message from Executive Director
Walter X. Kalman

Thank You for Advocating for Health Care

Late, last Friday we had a major, though temporary, victory in the fight to preserve health care in America. Failing to receive the 51 votes needed to pass, the Republican's "skinny repeal" of the Obamacare died on the floor of the Senate. A dramatic "thumbs down" vote from McCain spelled a major defeat for a party who's rallying cry has long centered around the ACA's repeal. NASW-NJ thanks John McCain, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins for having the courage to vote against their party on this particular, important issue.

We also want to thank you, both as NASW-NJ staff and as fellow citizens, for your noble efforts. Over the course of this fight social workers in NJ have taken important actions to impact this outcome. You have made countless calls, written numerous letters, and spent hours commuting to visit with Federal and State legislators. We're counting on your continued support as we brace for the next assault on health care. Please continue checking newSWire and follow us on Facebook for updates and calls to action.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
(Non-NASW Sponsored**)

THERE'S NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH
BREATHING AND LEARNING THROUGH THE VAGAL NERVE
Presented by Rev. Karen E. Herrick, PhD, LCSW, LMSW, CADC
September 18, 2017; 6:00-9:15 pm
United Methodist Church
247 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701
Cost: $68 (3-hour workshop)
3 CEU hours approved for social workers by NASW-NJ
The purpose of this interactive workshop is to show how the vagus nerve (The Polyvagal Theory: Porges 2011) helps an individual to understand the neurophysiological processes of their body and their reactions to other people and their environment. This is a new brain-body science that can demystify some features related to trauma and stress that have caused psychiatric disorders such as PTSD, autism, depression and anxiety. A healthier mental state can then be created.
Register at www.spiritualexperiences.info.  $68 by PayPal or check. For more information call 732- 530-8513.
