2017 Annual Meeting Recap

On Thursday, July 20, 40 trustees and members gathered in the Volunteers Garden for the annual membership meeting of the Cleveland Restoration Society. Members enjoyed an al fresco breakfast while hearing updates from the board and staff on the successes of the past year.

Three new trustees were selected to join the board: Arne Goldman, of Marous Brothers Construction, Wayne Mortensen, of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, and Elizabeth Corbin Murphy, of Chambers, Murphy & Burge Architects, a Studio of Perspectus Architecture. These individuals have already been contributing to the cause of the Cleveland Restoration Society and we look forward to what their skills and expertise will bring to our board in the years to come.

A sample of our accomplishments from 2016 includes stabilizing the Scofield Mansion to prevent further decay and selling the Shaker Heights property at 2834 Courtland Blvd. to an established developer. The Scofield Mansion Project is especially poignant as its success was made possible by the contributed services and time of our partners on the project: Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, Coon Restoration, Precision Environmental and Secureview.

More details on our work in 2016 can be found in our annual report, available here as a pdf and in hard copy format.

Contact Stephanie Allen to receive a hard copy version.

Lost Cleveland
Book Signing and Reception
Laura DeMarco is an arts and culture reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer whose new book, Lost Cleveland, revisits many of Cleveland's glorious buildings. Many buildings did not survive changing times, styles, demographics and economic downturns, but they are preserved in Lost Cleveland. The book includes rare vintage photos along with colorful background stories. Many of Cleveland's "lost" notable structures are brought to light, including The Elysium Arena, The Hollenden Hotel, the City of Cleveland Steamship, Luna Park, and the Warner and Swasey Observatory just to name a few. Join Laura DeMarco on August 24, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Appletree Books, 12419 Cedar Rd. in Cleveland Heights, to hear more about her new book.

New Options for Vacant Properties in Limbo: Affordable Clearboarding
Secureview, industry leader in clearboarding, is eager to find a solution to vacant properties boarded with plywood, which negatively impact property values and contribute to crime and neglect. Their solution is affordable clearboarding - clear polycarbonate sheets that can be used to cover windows and prevent vandalism without the negative repercussions of plywood or unsheltered windows. CRS can attest to the performance of Secureview's Clearboarding, donated for use in our Scofield Mansion Project.
