Enforcement blitz nets almost 2,000 speeders in Missouri
Six-state regional effort, obey the sign or pay the fine
Missouri law enforcement officials issued 1,951 speeding citations as part of a six-state speed enforcement blitz conducted throughout the state from July 21 to July 23.
"Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine" was an intensified effort to crack down on speeding in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas and Oklahoma. More than 7,700 speeding tickets were issued in the six states during the three-day enforcement period.
In addition to cracking down on speeding, the effort also resulted in citations for other offenses, such as driving while intoxicated and not wearing seat belts. In Missouri, the results for the "Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine" initiative are as follows:

Law enforcement officials reported 180 crashes in Missouri during the blitz, 33 of which were speed related. In addition, there were seven fatalities on Missouri highways during the three-day speeding crackdown, with one occurring on the routes included in the enforcement effort. Interstates 70, 44, 55, 35 were the primary routes targeted in the initiative because that's where most of the state's speed-related crashes occur.

Visit MoDOT's highway gardens at the state fair
 Going to the Missouri state fair this year? Then be sure to visit the MoDOT highway gardens. The gardens are set in a shady location that offers a lower-key atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the fair. The building is air conditioned, which is perfect on those hot summer days.
Outside, kids can have their photo taken with MoDOT's highway safety mascot Barrel Bob and Baby Bob. Inside, kids can participate in the Adopt-A-Highway scavenger hunt, while parents can see a variety of displays. Some of the information offered will be: the solar eclipse, Buckle Up-Phone Down safety campaign, Amtrak and MoDOT's historic preservation. AT&T's It Can Wait virtual reality simulator will also be available the first four days of the fair.

Missouri expecting many visitors to view the Aug. 21 solar eclipse
 An estimated 1.2 million visitors will come to Missouri for the Aug. 21 solar eclipse. Be prepared for extra congestion, and consider these driving safety tips:
- No parking on the shoulder of highways
- Exit the highway to view and/or photograph the eclipse
- Turn your headlights on (don't rely on auto headlights
- Don't wear "eclipse glasses" while driving
- Avoid travel during the eclipse if you can
- Make sure your car has a full tank of gas and you have water
- Be prepared for potential cell service outage
- Use MoDOT's Traveler Information Map for traffic updates

Projects receive awards for innovation
 The innovative design-build Project Freeway: U.S. 60 Rogersville has been awarded the top honor in the mid-America regional America's Transportation Awards competition.
The award was for top project in the Quality of Life/Community Development (medium category) and was the inaugural design-build project for MoDOT's Southwest District.
The project also received the National Award of Merit from the Design-Build Institute of America. The project was recognized for its innovative design. It now competes nationally for Project of the Year.
Project Freeway built three new interchanges, removed two traffic signals, built a series of connector roads and eliminated seven at-grade intersections along Route 60. All of which improved safety and is moving traffic more efficiently through the community.

Columbia I-70 Bridges design-build project
is a winner in the mid-America regional America's Transportation Awards competition
in the Best Use of Technology and Innovation category for small projects.
The project replaced bridges on Interstate 70 at Garth Avenue, Range Line Street and Business Loop 70/West Boulevard in Columbia. Improving the interchanges at Range Line Street and Business Loop were also part of the project.
Three of the bridges that were replaced were built adjacent to the old bridges and slid into their permanent position to save time and money.

Missouri's graduated driver license law
Do you know about Missouri's graduated driver license law? It requires that all first-time drivers between 15 and 18 years old complete a period of driving with a licensed driver (instruction permit), and restricted driving (intermediate license) before getting a full driver license.
