Dear Covenant family and friends,
This week's story is about Joseph wrestling with the Holy One. At the end of the match, Jacob is amazed that he has seen the face of God and is still alive to tell about it.
There are two traditions about beholding God's face that seem to be at odds with each other. One says that if we were to look God in the face, we would surely die. It would simply be too much for us. The other says, "Seek the face of God and live!"
So, which is it?
What happens when we meet God face to face, when we have an intimate encounter with the Holy One, and why do we imagine it to be terrifying?
And what does all this have to do with us as we check our emails and try to negotiate our lives? How does any of this face-of-God stuff help us when the world seems to be on fire?
Two months away from the pulpit, and here I am with nothing but questions.
Just wait until
Sunday!
With you in the struggle,
Katie
