PRC releases population forecast for Washington County
An additional 176,000 people will call Washington County home by 2035, for a total population of 765,445, according to a Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) report.
PRC's report "Coordinated Population Forecast for Washington County, its Urban Growth Boundaries (UGB), and Area Outside UGBs 2017-2067" projects the County's population will exceed 1 million by 2067. In addition to Washington County, the report includes individual population forecasts for Banks, North Plains and the portion of Gaston located in Washington County.
Highlights include:
  • The County's population growth rate is forecast to peak at 1.7 percent in 2020, before slowing through 2067. The slowdown is expected to result from an aging population and lower fertility rates, combined with a steady rate of net in-migration.
  • North Plains is expected to see a growth rate of 5.5 percent through 2035, which would more than double the current population of 2,266.
  • Banks' growth rate is forecasted to be 2.3 percent, generating a population increase of about 1,000.
Forecasts for the Washington County cities within the Metro Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) will be completed by Metro in 2018.
