Dear Friends:
Our summer activity is taking pictures of where you find God. Deciding what picture to take is going to be particularly hard for me since I see God around me all of the time; in the glow of the clouds at sunset, the quiet sparkling of the trees after an ice storm, the overwhelming vastness of the Milky Way on a moonless night in Maine, everywhere. As a scientist, I have some understanding of the physical forces behind what I see. Because I am a scientist, I am certain that God exists. My limited knowledge makes me realize that the universe is more wondrous and miraculous than we will ever fully comprehend. Next month there will be solar eclipse visible here in Connecticut. As you watch the eclipse, keep in mind that the moon is just the right size, at just the right distance, and in just the right orbit to make this display of God's creation possible. On August 21
st I will
be looking up, "rapt in awe", thanking God for this gift.
The most beautiful and most profound experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive forms - this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness.
