I hope this newsletter finds you bringing in plenty of tomatoes, peppers, squash, green beans, and other summer vegetables! This month we continue our popular
'Cooking in the Garden' series with a garden tour and cooking demonstration at the Trinity Presbyterian Church Garden on August 21. Please join us to learn tasty and nutritious ways to use your summer harvest!
Even as we enjoy the bounty of summer gardens, I also encourage you to think ahead to the fall gardening season. To start, testing your garden soil now will ensure that you get results back in time to prepare the soil for a productive fall garden. See 'In the Garden' (below) for details about how to take and submit soil samples, and interpret the results. We also have a great lineup of gardening programs set for September and October, so do mark your calendar for any Forsyth Extension Gardener workshops or 'Forks on Friday' classes you'd like to attend. Improving your garden soil, extending your growing season, using native plants in your garden, and more... there's something for everyone! Please read on to learn more!

IN THE GARDEN
Time for Soil Testing!
Now is the time to take and submit soil samples for testing so you can plan for a productive fall garden! Making sound decisions about soil management starts with learning your soil's pH and nutrient and organic matter contents. You'll learn if you need to add lime to raise the pH of your soil, and if you need to add nutrients to get the best harvest. Applying only the nutrients you need - and not more! - will help protect the environment, since excess fertilizer can pollute water through runoff and leaching. Getting a soil test is the only way to know what your crops really need.
The NC Department of Agriculture offers FREE soil testing from April through mid-November. Soil sample boxes, forms, and
instructions can be picked up from the Extension office (1450 Fairchild Rd. in Winston-Salem). Once you've sampled your garden beds, bring the samples back to Extension and we'll ship them to the lab free of charge.
Come learn about a new community food market opening soon in Winston-Salem! The SHARE Food Cooperative aims to provide healthy food at a reasonable cost, bring together people of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, and offer educational programs in nutrition, life skills, and more. SHARE is a project of the Freedom Tree at IDR in collaboration with community partners. For more information, please visit the SHARE website and download a flyer for the SHARE Community Meeting.
