Skin Conditions
Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that affects more than 16 million Americans. The cause of rosacea is still unknown, and there is no cure. However, research has allowed doctors to develop a course of treatment that effectively controls rosacea by minimizing its symptoms.

There are four subtypes of rosacea. Each subtype has its own set of symptoms. It is possible to have more than one subtype of rosacea at a time.

Rosacea's trademark are small, red, pus-filled bumps on the skin that are present during flare-ups. Typically, rosacea affects only skin on your nose, cheeks, and forehead.

Flare-ups often occur in cycles. This means that you will experience symptoms for weeks or months at a time, the symptoms will go away, and then they will return.

Photosensitivity

Photosensitivity is an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources. Most people are at risk of developing sunburn during long exposure to sunlight.

Exposure to UV rays from the sun can also lead to skin damage and skin cancer. People who are photosensitive may develop skin rashes or burns, even after limited exposure to the sun.

Phototoxic reactions are caused when a new chemical in your body interacts with UV rays from the sun. The result is a skin rash that looks like a severe sunburn, which usually develops within 24 hours of exposure to the sun.

Photoallergic reactions can also develop as a side effect of some medications. They can also develop because of chemicals found in beauty products and sunscreen. These types of reactions to the sun tend to take a few days for a rash to develop after sun exposure.

What is Onychomycosis?
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the fingernails and/or toenails. Fungal infections normally develop over time, so any immediate difference in the way your nail looks or feels may be too subtle to notice at first.

A fungal nail infection occurs from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so this type of environment can cause them to naturally overpopulate.

There are many different causes of fungal nail infections and some of the causes are preventable. You're more likely to develop a fungal nail infection if you:
  • have diabetes
  • have a disease that causes poor circulation
  • are over age 65
  • wear artificial nails
  • swim in a public swimming pool
  • have a nail injury
  • have a skin injury around the nail
  • have moist fingers or toes for an extended time
  • have a weakened immune system
  • wear closed-toe shoes, such as tennis shoes or boots
Fungi that are already present in or on your body can cause nail infections. If you have come in contact with someone else who has a fungal infection, it may have spread to you. Fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails because your toes are usually confined to your shoes, where they're in a warm, moist environment.

If you get a manicure or pedicure at a nail salon, be sure to ask how the staff disinfects their tools and how often they do it. Tools, such as emery boards and nail clippers, can spread fungal infections from person-to-person if they're not sanitized.

Treatment Options:

Over-the-counter products aren't usually recommended to treat nail infections because they don't provide reliable results. Instead, you may be prescribe a topical or oral antifungal medication, such as:

Oral Medications:
  • terbinafine (Lamisil)
  • fluconazole (Diflucan)
Topical Medications:
  • Efinaconazole
  • Tavaborole
  • Topical Lamisil

Topical treatments are brushed onto the nail in the same way that you would apply nail polish. Depending on the type of fungus causing the infection, as well as the extent of the infection, you may have to use these medications for several months. Treatment isn't guaranteed to rid your body of the fungal infection completely. In almost half of all cases, the fungal nail infection will return.
