NAMI Advocacy: Senate Health Reform Update

The vote on the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) was delayed over the weekend while Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) recovers from surgery. Since then, more Senators said they would vote no on the current version of the BCRA, making it impossible to pass in its current form. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without an immediate replacement. Enough Senators have already indicated they would vote no on this proposal. Read Kaiser's summary of the revised BCRA.

Regardless of how the Senate proceeds, NAMI is not seeing any proposal that would meet our simple test for health reform: Will Americans have more mental health coverage and better care?

The fight is not over.

The Senate is still pursuing options and we need to keep up the pressure. Tell Senators we need more coverage for mental health care, not less.

What to do this week:
Regardless of whether your Senators are opposed to or supportive of health reform, your actions will help emphasize how Senate proposals impact people with mental illness.
  1. Post on social media using #Act4MentalHealth
  2. Tweet directly at your Senators here: http://ow.ly/lKYs30dJaOt
  3. Post directly on your Senators' Facebook page
  4. Join our State Advocacy Network call for a discussion of the Senate health reform bill on July 20 at 4 p.m. ET. Call (888) 858-6021 Access code: 739264#
Below you will find new talking points about health reform, including some state-specific statistics around the impact of the legislation. In addition you will see sample Facebook and Twitter messages for public engagement.

Post on your Senators' Facebook page
As the Senate considers how to move forward with health reform, I urge you to ask yourself: Will Americans have more mental health coverage and better care?

Any Senate proposal should improve mental health coverage, not take us back to a time when people: were denied insurance coverage because they had a mental health condition; were charged more just because they have a mental health condition; were dropped from their health plan or turned down for renewal because they used mental health services; and had yearly or lifetime limits on mental health care-or no mental health benefits at all. We need more coverage for mental health care, not less. Please #Act4MentalHealth.

Senate health reform efforts are evolving rapidly. Regardless of how the Senate proceeds, every proposal needs to meet a simple test: Will Americans have more mental health coverage and better care?
