4th of July Pick up Changes

Happy 4th of July! Please remember that the following pick ups have changed for this week.
  • The Dracut pick-up will take place on THURSDAY, July 6
As a reminder, if you cannot pick up your share, you can send a friend to pick up for you. You do not need to notify us in advance; just have your friend give your name at the pick up.

As usual, all unclaimed shares will be donated to a hunger relief organization.

Thank you very much,
The Farmer Dave's Crew
Farm Notes:
Firework carrots from 2015
This week we celebrate Independence Day, when more than two centuries ago, our nation was created by rejecting the sovereignty of the British Crown as our ruler. Even though we were not there then, nor perhaps were many of our ancestors (as we are a nation of immigrants), we celebrate the leap of faith our predecessor Americans took when they declared their independence from King George. It is difficult, today, to fully grasp the gravity of that declaration. Yet, many of our forbearers died fighting for our independence, and many more have given their lives since our Revolutionary war to preserve and protect our nation and the principles we as Americans live by. Our nation of people and the democratic system that we fight to protect became the model of many struggling nations in the world. The beauty of our society is its independence and freedom. Our country will never be perfect. Yet, by its very nature, it can freely evolve to preserve its beauty. As long as we, the people, are good and take an active role in our society, our nation's glory will endure. Around the world America has been recognized as a beautiful country. The beauty of America lies not only in our freedom to think independently, but in the fact that we are encouraged to think independently. We often do not all agree with each other, yet we respect each other's beliefs. In many societies of the world, those who disagree, disappear. In our disagreements and our freedom to disagree, lies our strength.

Let Freedom Ring,
Farmer Dave

"Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bands." -- Thomas Jefferson
Please Return CSA Bins

We are running dangerously low on our reusable plastic CSA bins. Please be sure to return any extra bins that you have around your house.

Additionally, please consider bringing reusable shopping bags with you to your pick up to transport your share home with you. We will also be sending plastic shopping bags to the pick ups this week if you'd like to leave your bin behind but have forgotten to bring reusable bags with you.

Thank you.
What's in The Share:
Week 4

Welcome peas and summer squash! The first few weeks of every New England CSA share will always have a great assortment of delicious, nutritious and tender greens. These greens grow well in the cool Spring weather.  As the weather warms into summer, you can expect the number of greens to decrease as the weather continues to warm and more variety begins to be able to be harvested from the fields.

Vegetable Share:
  • Lettuce
  • Arugula or Sorrel
  • Swiss Chard, Kale or Purslane
  • Garlic Scapes
  • Summer Squash or Kousa Squash
  • Radishes or Hakurei Turnips
  • Peas
  • Chives
  • Basil or Parsley
  • and more!
Fruit Share:
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries (if we're lucky!)
This is what we are planning and hoping to harvest this week.  Ultimately Mother Nature has the last word so the actual contents of your share will vary.

As the summer progresses we'll be adding more local and seasonal products.  For the food preservers in the group, we will be offering bulk quantities of some of our vegetables and fruits, on weeks that we have extra available.
Groundwork Share-a-Share Update

Thanks to generous donations by you (CSA members) to the Groundwork Share-A-Shareâ„¢ fund, we were able to subsidize the cost of shares in 2016 for over thirty individuals and families, as well as shares for local food pantries.

Please consider helping us in our efforts to make the CSA accessible to more families by donating to Groundwork Share-A-Share.
