We love our new library. But even more, we love the community of friends that has grown up around this enterprise, supporting us in all we do and inspiring us to do even more.
I was reminded of how very fortunate we are on the evening of Thursday, June 29, when library Trustees, friends and staff gathered at a reception following the annual meeting of the Friends of the Edgartown Library. It was a warm and celebratory occasion with food, good conversation and recognition for community services given. Julie Lively, chairman of the Trustees, expressed thanks for the hard work of outgoing Trustees Deanna Ahearn-Laird, Denise Searle, Bob Avakian and Carl Watt -- recognizing their dedication and the special contributions each made during their tenures. Julie also welcomed the library's two newly elected Trustees, David Faber and Chris Scott, and she thanked the Friends for their ongoing support and for the good cheer they bring to all they do for the library.
You'll see members of the Friends in support roles at a number of our July events, especially the popular Tuesday music series on our front lawn. July really is a month when the library's programs are so many and so varied, they come spilling out of the building.
And you are all invited.

Panel Program: Birding the Island
Three of the Vineyard's most knowledgeable birding experts will be at the Edgartown Library to answer your questions. Soo Whiting, Allan Keith, and Matthew Pelikan will make up the evening's panel, with avian photography provided by Lanny McDowell.

Opening Reception 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 8
While out at sea on a pelagic birding trip, Lanny McDowell, well-known Vineyard avian photographer, found his boat surrounded by a pod of playful dolphins. Amazingly, lightning struck twice and the result of these trips, Dolphin Seas, is on exhibit at the Edgartown Library through July.
Come meet the artist at an opening reception, Saturday, July 8, from 2-4.

Sounds Like Summer:
Free Music Programs on the Lawn,
Tuesday evenings at 6:30
Beginning July 11
Sounds Like Summer, one of the Edgartown Library's favorite high-season traditions, is back on Tuesdays this July and August. Popular Island performers will play for an hour, and you're welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Be warned - there may be dancing.
July 11
Sabrina and the Groovers kick off our Tuesday concert series. Bring a blanket, friends, the kids-- all are welcome to enjoy Sabrina's groovy vocal stylings and her fabulous band.
July 18
Johnny Hoy and the Blue Fish, the Island's favorite party band, will rock the summer evening. Wear your dancing shoes.
July 25
The Joel Harris Trio brings its jazzy standards to the library lawn. All are welcome.

Stranger in a Strange Land:
Film Series Concludes with Three July Programs
Stranger in a Strange Land, the library's latest free film series, concludes this month with films on three Wednesday evenings. Please note, these programs are for adults.

The Immigrant
Set in New York City in the early 20th century, two sisters leave their native Poland in search of a new start and the American Dream. Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix star, directed by James Gray (US, 2014).
Wednesday, July 19, 7 p.m.
Missing
Director Costa-Gavras' tense political thriller follows an American businessman (a powerful performance by Jack Lemmon) searching for his missing son in the hectic aftermath of the 1973 Chilean coup d'état. Sissy Spacek co-stars in this fact-based film (US, 1982).
Wednesday, July 26, 7 p.m.
The Europa Report
A documentary style approach, coupled with the film's sleek aesthetic, gives authenticity to this Sci-Fi thriller. Directed by Sebastián Cordero (US, 2013).

Our Opera Club presentation for July is an enchanting production of The Magic Flute from the ever-inventive Bregenz Festival in Austria. Mozart combines fairy tale, farce, Masonic rites, and the great questions of the Enlightenment with some of the most beautiful music in opera.
Alfred Reiter sings Sarastro, Norman Reinhardt Tamino, and Bernarda Bobro, Pamina. Patrick Summers directs the Vienna Symphony and Prague Philharmonic Choir, in David Pountney's staging. Sung in German with English subtitles. All adults welcome.
All adults are welcome. Please note that Opera Club screenings are being presented on Sundays through September.

Author Talk: Elin Hilderbrand
7 p.m. Wednesday, July 12
For almost twenty years author Elin Hilderbrand's best-selling beach reads have been devoured by an army of readers hungry for summertime fun and romance. Her books are among the most popular in the library's fiction collection -- the critics have called her novels "intelligent escapism with heart."
Her newest novel,
The Identicals, tells the story of twins who couldn't be less alike.
Come meet Ms. Hilderbrand at a free Author Talk and hear all about it.
Signed copies of The Identicals will be available for purchase. Seating in our program room is limited to 100 people.

Author Talk: Mark Schneider
on His Biography of
Cong. Gerry Studds
7 p.m. Thursday, July 13
Author Mark Schneider presents his new biography,
Gerry Studds: America's First Openly Gay Congressman. A Democrat, Studds represented the Cape and Islands for twenty-four years and is well-known in Edgartown. He gave his retirement address at the Old Whaling Church in 1996.
At his death in 2006, his husband, Dean Hara, told
The New York Times, "Gerry often said that it was the fight for gay and lesbian equality that was the last great civil rights chapter in modern American history.
He did not live to see its final sentences written," Mr. Hara added, "but all of us will forever be indebted to him for leading the way with compassion and wisdom."

The Sanctuaries of Sheriff's Meadow:
Featuring a Virtual Tour of Tuthill Preserve,

Sheriff's Meadow Foundation was founded in 1959 by Henry Beetle Hough and Elizabeth Bowie Hough, born of their determination to conserve land that no other organization would. Today, the
Foundation owns 72 preserves totaling 2,075 acres, and holds 42 conservation restrictions over an additional 825 acres. Sheriff's Meadow Foundation owns land in every town on the Island.
Tonight's program,
An introduction to the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation's Sanctuaries on the Island, includes a virtual tour of the Caroline Tuthill Preserve on the library's big screen. All are welcome.

Summer Reading Program Begins:
Your Guide to July in the Children's Room
"Build a Better World with Science" is the statewide theme for summer reading programs this year, and we're getting into the spirit with four Friday programs, including hands-on experiences, this July. There's also an art workshop thrown in on a Monday afternoon. Here's the lineup.
Friday, July 7: 3 pm - Whale Science: Julianne Gurnee from NOAA gives a program about whales, including how science is working to avoid ship whale strikes.
Friday, July 14: 3 pm - Build a Better World with Science: Marshmallows and Spaghetti -
 which shapes are strongest?
Monday, July 17: 2 pm - Cereal Box Art Workshop: With guest artist Michael Alpert. All materials will be provided.
Friday, July 21: 3 pm - Build a Better World with Science: Explore with civil and marine engineer Chris Snow.
Friday, July 28: 3 pm - Build a Better World with Science: We'll learn about flotation by reading Who Sank the Boat, making tin foil boats and testing them by loading with a cargo of pennies.
Regular children's programs in July
Wednesdays, 10:30 am-Noon: Summer readers give their book reports. (This summer, read or listen to 10 books on your reading level and report on them to earn a T-shirt. You can report online as well,
using this link. For every book you read, choose a prize from the library's treasure chest.)
