Salesman Today

simpleSimplifed Processes

by Wayne Ulanski, PresidentWayne@SVF.net

If there is anything we should be learning from the cultural upheaval caused by the many online companies it is that they have been able, in a very short time, to convert many of us to online shoppers. It was not too long ago that no one would believe that Brick and Mortar businesses would become an endangered species. Yet online purchases have become the norm in our society and the big stores are indeed suffering.

In an article on the demise of shopping malls the writer stated, "the case for Amazon is pretty strong when the alternative is to crawl through gridlock to a mall, unwittingly park in the space farthest from the store you plan to visit, cringe as toddlers' shrieks reverberate off the tile floors, and dodge salesmen hawking knockoff perfumes and hundred-dollar curling irons."

These are some of the reasons why we have lost our interest in going to malls. So, what are the online retailers doing to make us the passionate champions that we have become?

Often the answer is simply, simplicity.

At SVF Flow Controls we have an ongoing agenda to Continuously Simplify. Each day we look for ways to make it easier to engagement with our customers.

Here are some examples of what we are doing to make it easier to do business with SVF:
  • Easier to use How To Order guides
  • Automated packages, under our Direct Mount initiative, now have single part numbers for the most common configurations

New Products = New Successes

In just one short week-after the introduction of EZ-Tork-we were able to win a major project for more than 100 automated valves. With EZ-Tork plus our award winning Nexus-LP we proposed a dynamic package that met all of the process parameters and had the added benefit of low cost field installation.

Nexus-LP is our compact and fully integrated Limit Switch + Pilot Valve that simplifies field installation by allowing all of the control components to be connected to a single terminal strip.

qualityQuality Spotlight

Quality is the Hallmark
of a Thriving Business

Quality consciousness has been a longtime concept and practice for SVF Flow Controls. We recognize that quality maintenance and quality improvement under a structural procedure is NOT negotiable and is essential to our corporate existence.

To underscore our commitment, we  welcome the newest member to our Quality division, Santos Orellana. Santos brings over 12 years of Quality Experience where he started  his career as a Micro Technician in the food industry which involved assuring FDA and USDA guidelines were met. His passion continues to be in the quality arena, and he brings with him experience and knowledge which will help SVF tremendously with our continuous improvement efforts.

When asked what his favorite aspect of quality is, he responded, "I like to take pride in my work and assure customer satisfaction as customers are our priority.  In addition, another aspect of quality I enjoy is training.  Instead of telling employees that quality is critical and important, showing them why and training them is essential.  Quality Control and Assurance is a team effort; everyone has to contribute in order to achieve the same goal."

Welcome, Santos!  We look forward to having you as part of our quality culture.
sevenThe Rule of 7

I f you are in Sales then you may find it helpful to understand the Rule of 7. This "rule" is well known in Marketing circles and can help you to reach prospects and convert them to customers.

Here's how I was taught the Rule of Seven.
How many times must you deliver a message until someone "gets it"?

  1. They will not remember
  2. They think they remember
  3. They intend to remember
  4. They promise to remember
  5. They remember but cannot recall
  6. They remember but do not know why
  7. They remember that they have seen you before
This is the real truth about the Rule of Seven.  It takes time   for people to get to know you - remember your name, your offer, your message. Once they know you, they need time to get to like you - and your business. Over time, they'll eventually start to trust you. Once they trust you - trust that you're honest and provide true value - then, and only then, will they be ready to buy.

salesmanThe Salesman Today

If you ask most people today where salespeople rank amongst all professionals, they are likely to say somewhere near the bottom. The used car salesman is perhaps the dregs of the lot. Valve salesmen don't necessarily have a place, hopefully because we have evolved away from the notorious reputation of those who have not.

Essentially, the first classification of sales types had sales people placed as The Music Man. Successful selling back a hundred years ago relied on their personality, their ability to charm customers. The prevalent mythology was that "Good salesmen are born, not made." Consequently, few companies provided any serious training or overseeing. Little if any attention was given to performance metrics.  Hence, the perception of salesmen was born in this era. Harold Hill of The Music Man could persuade anyone to buy almost anything!
