AUGUST  2017
@ THE MACC

Aloha!  As we turn into the last of summer, I'd like to tell you a bit about the accomplishments of "summer school" at Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
You may already know that every year we offer a  Summer Institute for Educators,  where teachers can come to advance their professional development. This is a win-win for Maui schools ... as you'll see below.
The past summers we have also offered hands-on art classes for kids in the Gallery:  Young Art Makers.  It's never too early to start encouraging the creativity of our keiki, and teaching artists were there to instruct and guide... and smile!

This year we also launched a brand new program in performing arts: Cross Currents for budding teen performers. Adults expressed interest too ...so evening classes were added to take full advantage of the visiting artists' expertise.
Meanwhile the beat never stops. The rest of us spent the summer preparing for our upcoming busy months of September through May, when we share the wealth of "The MACC Presents"  series of performances, exhibits, and events. Check out the exciting announcements in the weeks to come ... it's all  @ the MACC.

YOUNG ART MAKERS

This year, our teaching artists offered classes for kids age 5-8, and 9-up, covering techniques in clay modelling, printmaking, painting, and cartooning.

You can see by both the concentrated expressions and the happy faces that creativity was flourishing!

CROSS CURRENTS
This program covered a variety of performing arts, with both traditional and contemporary influences. Budding performers learned about honing their craft, getting ready for performance, and picked up skills tips from professional performers.

The teen portion of the program was conducted in partnership with Boys & Girls Club of Central Maui.
SUMMER INSTITUTE
Every year, our Arts Education Department invites teachers to come learn new classroom skills, investigate innovative curriculum ideas, and gain points in their career paths. This year 60 teachers came to "summer school" -  making a total of 243 teachers who have participated in professional development in the past 4 summers.  Extrapolating the number of kids in each classroom times the number of teachers participating over the past decade means that the number of students positively affected by this extra education is HUGE!
"The MACC Presents..."
Every year around September/October, we announce some of the exciting new performances and exhibits in series of "The MACC Presents..." Of course, new shows and events pop up all the time year round, but this is traditionally our announcement of fine arts programming.
Watch for news of exciting new shows over the next few weeks, and get ready for a rousing season of discovery in the theater arts, dance, classical and popular music, visual art - and more!  @ the MACC!
