Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 07 18 17

Parents and Guardians,

I truly hope you and your student are having a great summer. It has been a good one for the Mayfield's, but it seems to be going by way too quickly. It seems like we graduated our Seniors a couple of weeks ago, and yet we are just a little more than a month away from the first day of school.

With that in mind, we have some reminders and information that we want to make sure you are aware of. Please take a few minutes and read through the email to stay up with the calendar of events for LHS students.

Sincerely.

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School
NOTE:
In an effort to be as efficient as possible, we prioritize our parent email as follows:
* New or time-sensitive topics of interest are at the top of the list
* Followed by the Calendar of Events and Activities
* Older items appear below the calendar until they become obsolete

If you would like to update your district/campus email preferences or change your email address, please click on the  Update Profile link at the footer of this email. You will receive an email from Constant Contact which will allow you to update your information and campus news preferences.

School Supplies
Compiling a list of common items needed for Lovejoy High School is a bit difficult considering the diversity of classes that a typical student can take. Knowing that many of you may want to shop for school supplies before you receive the complete list from teachers on the 1st day of school, we invite you to click SUPPLIES to consult a spreadsheet that details what items are needed for each department. Please note that there are 5 tabs, one for each of the core subjects: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and LOTE.

Sports Physicals and Cardiac Screenings - THIS Saturday!
Saturday, July 22, 2017
Location: Willow Springs Middle School
Time:  8:00 am - 1:00 pm

For your convenience, the Lovejoy Sports Medicine Department is offering sports physicals and hosting the WHO WE PLAY FOR for cardiac screenings. Physicals and cardiac screens are open to all 2017-18 incoming 7th - 12th grade student-athletes. A parent or guardian should attend with the student to sign permission forms.

The physical examination consists of the parent or guardian completing a medical history followed by a thorough medical and orthopedic assessment by a host of qualified nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and physicians.

Please RSVP:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6962FVS  for each student attending physicals and/or cardiac screenings.

Cost: $20 for physicals, payable to Lovejoy Athletics.
Cost: $15 for cardiac screen, payable to WHO WE PLAY FOR.
Payment due at WSMS on July 22nd. Checks or cash only. No credit cards.

Lovejoy ISD requires that every student-athlete in grades 7 through 12 receive an annual physical prior to participation in sports.

The cardiac screen is not required for participation in athletics at Lovejoy ISD but it is highly recommended. WHO WE PLAY FOR recommends testing at least once during high school.

This is a fundraising event for our Sports Med Department and we appreciate your support!

Texas Boys State
Ryan Brands, Lovejoy High School senior, graduates as one of the 1,100 future leaders that assembled at University of Texas in Austin, for the prestigious program sponsored by the American Legion, Department of Texas, known as Texas Boys State. Brands was elected to the Texas House of Representatives and was also elected as a platform delegate.  He also raced in the running events during the week.

This year, Texas Boys State delegates made history when they voted for the first time to secede from the union!  Ryan said "My experience at Boys State has given me a new disposition on how I want to be involved, wherever I go, in politics. It has helped show me the importance of getting involved in my community and local politics because it does not make sense to let someone, I do not know, make laws that affect me."

Begun in 1935, Boys State is a unique program that educates future leaders about government, civics, and patriotism in a "learn by doing" environment. Each delegate has just finished his junior year of high school and was hand-picked by teachers, counselors, and local American Legion posts throughout Texas to attend this one week seminar.

During the week, the delegates were evenly split into fictional parties of the Nationalist and Federalists. Each party drafted party platforms, elected party officials, nominated candidates via primary elections, and contested a general election against the rival party and its candidates. The delegates ran for many kinds of offices including state, district, county, and city offices. Those elected to the House of Representatives and Senate spent the week drafting, debating, and passing bills on a wide range of social and economic issues.

This year, the delegates heard from more than 40 distinguished guest speakers, ranging from Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick and State Board of Education member Tom Maynard, to several state legislators and former San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza.
Brands recalls, "People told me going into Boys State that it was completely what I would make of it. So accordingly I took a head-first attitude and stepped out of my comfort level. I went for 2 political positions and got them both, in addition, I fought and debated for my beliefs to be heard in the party. Looking back on the Texas Boys State experience, I am glad I made the choices I did.  It was a great learning event that I would recommend for anyone who has a political passion and wants to get more involved.  I feel greatly honored to have had the pleasure of attending Texas Boys State.  I would like to thank everyone who helped make it possible for me to take part.
