It's summer and the 'HEAT IS ON' literally and figuratively. The San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition's Community Cat Adoption Program is overflowing with kittens. We have had to close our intake and go into fundraising mode to have enough money for their vetting/food/unplanned illness etc. This means we cannot save anymore cats and kittens until we raise funds to take care of the ones we have.

It's the height of kitten season and our Community Cat Adoption Program could use all the help it can get for the current cats and kittens in our care.

SAFCC receives matching grant from Community Cats Podcast

Last month, SAFCC received $1,000 for our TNR program from the Community Cat Podcast. The Community Cat Grants are given out to 501c3 organizations to help with spay/neuter programs. In order to receive funds all groups must spay/neuter before adoption, not test TNR'd cats for FIV/Felv and share live release rates.

This grant is a matching grant opportunity and we were able to make the match through our Fiesta Medal fundraising. Thanks again to all of those who purchased a medal!
Amazing generosity helps us continue our TNR work 

We would like to thank Sue and Bob Gilliam for a $20,000 donation toward our TNR program made possible by a trust from Michael Dudte. The trust was funded by his sister, Mary Dudte Williams who passed away in 2007 and was an executive secretary with Luby's Cafeteria. 

Mr Gilliam was the trustee for Mr Dudte and he and his wife, Sue, attended our TNR Class and fixed their colony which has gradually decreased in numbers. SAFCC will be using this very generous donation to TNR cats that are fed by the elderly and disabled and do not have anyone else to trap them. Thanks again to the Gilliams for doing their own TNR and for helping our community continue this important work!

Urgent - Temporary Fosters Needed! 

Do you have two or three weeks to give a cat (or two) a much needed break from cubicle life? Our respite foster is on vacation and all of our regular fosters are maxed out. Fireworks, the fourth and felines! 

More pets get lost on July 4th than any other day of the year. Keep your cat safe this Independence Day with these seven tips. 

  1. Be sure your cat is wearing an up-to-date and visible ID tag on her collar at all times.
  2. Take a current photo of your cat, just in case.
  3. Give your cat a good play session before people come over for any celebrations. 
  4. Ask guests to keep an eye out for your cat, to be sure she doesn't escape. 
  5. Keep charcoal, fireworks, sparklers and glow sticks far from curious cats.
  6. Put your cat in a safe, escape-proof room during parties and fireworks.
  7. If your cat is afraid of loud noises, leave gentle music playing to cover the fireworks.

Success Tails! 

Elizabeth took our TNR class and has been diligently trapping and fixing her colony for years, although the female having all the kittens had thus far eluded her. Well, good news! Elizabeth finally caught her Fertile Myrtle! Here's the trapping success story as well as pics of Fertile Myrtle and her adult children who complete her little colony: Sara Lee, Little Debbie, Betty Crocker, and Duncan Hines.

"I caught Fertile Myrtle (my Moby Dick), who I've been trying to catch for nearly 4 years now, and got her fixed....Now Myrtle's colony is 100% neutered, her and all her offspring. Over the past 4 years I've tried regular trapping at all hours of the day, big boy traps, drop traps, nets, all kinds of foods, anything I could think of with no success. When she sees or hears a trap, she heads for the hills. What finally did it was that I left 2 of my traps where I feed (which is risky, but they were well hidden and I was desperate) and held them open with a bungie cords. The cats HAD to go in to eat. I think Myrtle boycotted for a few days but eventually got too hungry. I went extremely early two Thursdays ago and put in the food and removed the bungie cords. She was pregnant and very hungry and finally gave in.

I cried tears of joy when I saw her. She has provided me with at least 20 kittens to neuter over the past 4 years. I've caught every last one except for her, until two weeks ago. Victory! She glares at me every time she sees me. I remind her that she won't hate me forever."

SpaySA- a source for education and assistance 

SpaySA currently provides prevention of pet overpopulation with education through their Pet Helpline and funding through their Voucher Program. 

The SpaySA Pet Helpline (Pet Help SA for short), is the first call line in San Antonio dedicated solely to the welfare of dogs and cats by providing residents with answers to pet inquiries and up to date information on services in the city. Have a question? Contact them by phone at 210-351-7729 (210-351-SPAY) or via email at [email protected]. The SpaySA Voucher Program surgeries are done at two Texas Veterinary Hospitals. The vouchers will be available to low-income residents of San Antonio and Bexar County with an emphasis on non-targeted zip codes that are not part of the current city contracted subsidized surgeries list for performing low-cost spay/neuter clinics.
