The Choices We Make

Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action  by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good fit, that is to say  compatible with your interests and abilities.

PLASTIC FREE JULY

You're not likely to be able to (or even to want to)
put into action ALL of these strategies.
But as Coach John Wooden used to say,

"Do not let what you cannot do
interfere with what you CanDo." ***
A-Z ALTERNATIVES
for living plastic-free

From bin liners to toothpaste,

to visit the Plastic Free July website.
Did you take the challenge?

*** OK, Wooden didn't spell CanDo the way we do.
C all it poetic licence.

COMPOST  CORNER

In honor of Camille and Phil, this important Compost Corner question takes the lead this week.

Q.  There are compostable diaper services available in the Bay Area, but none that serve Napa at this time. Which is more environmentally conscious between a cloth diaper service and a compostable diaper service? Also, are compostable diapers okay to put into the brown bins?

A.  Disposable diapers are a very significant portion of the waste stream, at least 2% of total landfilled material by weight in the US (so probably more than that in CA where we divert a higher percentages of other materials).

They are mostly made of plastic and are single-use, so significant resources go into their production...and when they go to the landfill (with pee/poop in them) the human waste generates methane, a greenhouse gas more than 20 times as potent at carbon dioxide.   Learn more...

Email questions about Curbside Composting or recycling
to the "Compost Corner".
We'll get responses to your questions from
Tim Dewey-Mattia, Napa Recycling
and Waste Services
