"Now you know"
Notes from our Historical Heritage Commission
The Episcopal Shield

  • Red Cross on white field is the cross of St. George and indicates our descent from the Church of England
  •
  • The St. Andrew's cross in outline in the Canton recalls our indebtedness to the Scottish Church in connection with the consecration of our first Bishop (Seabury) who was consecrated at Aberdeen in 1784.
  •
  • The 9 crosslets symbolize the 9 original dioceses which met in Philadelphia and in 1789 adopted the Constitution of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.A.
  •
  • Colors red, white, and blue represent our country and stand for the American branch of the Anglican Communion.

SUMMER FORMATION

A History of Christianity (video & conversation) - Part 4 of 10
Sundays Thru August 13, 9:30-10:30 AM, Berlin Room
(Children and Youth Formation resumes August 20)

Our faith has a surprising history that has much to teach as we live out our faith today. All are invited to join this ongoing discovery as we watch the next installment of Diarmaid MacCulloch's A History of Christianity followed by conversation around your insights and curiosity.

THIS Sunday:  how the Roman form of Christianity reached its heights and depths, first as part of the machinery of Roman imperialism and then as the head of European civilization.

LAST Sunday's extraordinary insights:
--300 years after the Roman Empire executed Jesus of Nazareth, a wily general who claimed the imperial throne, Constantine, changed the course of Christianity within the Roman world from a persecuted, underground sect to the established religion of his empire. When the Imperial Rome collapsed, the church remained and its leading bishop, the bishop of the church in the city of Rome, grew in influence and power.

--Secret symbols of the early church (pre-imperial church) were the fish and the anchor and monogram-like references to Jesus Christ. In Greek, the first two letters of the word for fish (lCTHYS) match the first letters of the name of Jesus (IESOUS) Christ (XPIOTOE), thus IC, IX, XP, and IHS. Elevated from underground status the established religion of the empire, the symbol of the cross came to prominence when Emperor Constantine abolished the practice of crucifixion as capital punishment.
