Canine Influenza Vaccination Information: Dr. Thompson appears on WLOS
WLOS recently came to Animal Hospital of North Asheville unsolicited and filmed a segment on Canine Influenza. Before you watch the segment, we would like to clarify that dogs not previously vaccinated with bivalent vaccine for H3N2 and H3N8 Canine Influenza require a series of two vaccinations two to four weeks apart at a total cost of $79. Peak immunity occurs two weeks after the second vaccination. Please do not confuse Canine Influenza with Parainfluenza which is a completely different virus that most dogs have been vaccinated against for years. The bivalent Influenza vaccine that protects against two strains of Canine Influenza was first available in December 2016, so not many dogs had previously been vaccinated with the bivalent vaccine.

Coping with Thunderstorms and Fireworks Season

We've reached the time of year when thunderstorms are frequent, and July 4th fireworks are happening soon. For many pets, loud noises and storms are not a big deal, but for others, it is a time filled with fear, stress, and even destructive behavior. We've learned that there is no one perfect way to manage every case of noise phobia, even in our own pets. Here are some of our stories:

Dr. Jim Earley is using different combinations of prescription medication for his three dogs affected by storm phobia:

"Storms can be a real nightmare for pets who are terrified by noise and sometimes the flashes of lightning.  I have 4 dogs, and 3 of them have storm phobia to some degree.  I have tried a multitude of things including white noise, safe areas like covered crates, supplements, and behavior modification. All of these methods have helped some, but I have found that they still need medication.

Painful Tooth Resorption Causes Misery in Cats and Even the Best Pet Parents Seldom Recognize It
By the age of four, half of cats have a painful condition called Tooth Resorption in one or more teeth.  As cats age beyond four years old, it is estimated that 75% or more suffer from this painful condition.  Despite the persistent pain, most cats do not show any outward symptoms, which was a valuable survival instinct prior to domestication as showing weakness was an invitation for attack by predators.  Unfortunately, because cats hide their pain so well, we see that even the most attentive and observant pet parents rarely have any awareness that their cat is experiencing dental pain.
