Resilience and Building Codes

SPONSORED EDITION
From the Editor
There are many challenges associated with Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). Product Category Rules (PCR) have only been established for many masonry products in the last year or so. EPDs can be challenging and expensive for manufacturers to produce and their usefulness beyond "earning a LEED credit" is questionable. How is a designer supposed to evaluate EPD for different products? Comparison of EPD is not permitted according to most PCR despite the desire of some to do so. This webinar aims to address some of these concerns. Read more in the link under EDUCATIONAL NEWS below.

GREEN BUILDING NEWS
Resilient construction is an area that interests industry and policy people alike because of its wide-ranging impact. The BuildStrong Coalition in the article below unites a broad spectrum of stakeholders with the goal of improving disaster resilience in construction. ~Tina

Forum Educates for Resilient Construction
NCMA.ORG
Capitol Hill Advocates attended The BuildStrong Coalltion, which held its 2017 National Thought Leaders Forum on Capitol Hill. The Forum convened industry experts and public officials to assess the power of disaster resiliency in construction to save lives and taxpayers dollars and explore solutions and incentives for strengthening buildings and mitigating damage from natural disasters. The event also served as the launchpad for the Coalition's new Make America Resilient Again (MARA) campaign, aimed at ensuring resiliency standards are prioritized when designing the future of U.S. infrastructure. CODES and STANDARDS
We don't often feature webinars, as they tend to focus on specific products, but the one below on building codes looks like a good introduction on the importance of code adoption and enforcement. ~Tina

Free Webinar on Building Codes - Why They Matter
Applied Technology Council
Building codes are regulations governing design, construction, alteration, and maintenance of structures, and are the foundation for community resilience. This webinar on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Pacific, will provide an overview of the building code pertaining to earthquake effects on buildings and underline the importance of code adoption and enforcement. This webinar is intended for a non-technical audience, and in particular, decision makers, such as city officials. Engineers and building professionals who are interested in communicating the importance of building codes to decision-makers may also find this webinar useful.  To register for the webinar, click here.

GREEN PRODUCT NEWS
As LEED v4 usage expands, many people still have questions about the new Materials and Resources credits. The article below provides a link to a "cheat sheet" that is a good summary of the new credits and which are easiest to pursue. ~Tina

Building Product Disclosure and Optimization "Cheat Sheet"
HPDC NEWSLETTER
Building Green has published the " BPDO Cheat Sheet," a handy reference for manufacturers and project teams to understand what's involved with the various options for the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization (BPDO) credits in LEED v4. "The three Building Product Disclosure and Optimization (BPDO) credits in LEED v4 are pushing the industry into new territory. USGBC has done a great job defining and spurring manufacturers to support some options, but others are not yet (as of mid-2017) achievable, for a range of reasons. So go after the easy ones, and don't waste time on others until they're within reach."

Webinar: New Benchmarking Guidance - Making EPDs Comparable
ASTM.ORG
Even with a standardized PCR creation process, EPDs from different manufacturers are not be comparable. Further, there is no standard process for creating industry average EPDs or instructions for how a manufacturer should compare its product-specific EPD, interpret the results and explain the relative environmental performance, as compared to the benchmark. This new benchmarking guidance is designed to address these challenges. This webinar, on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m. ET, will kick off the comment period and all are welcome to review. Details will be provided. It also serves as an invitation to industry associations to understand the benefits for your members - and your industry - and to consider getting started.

Symposium on Balancing Resiliency, Safety, and Sustainability
ASTM.ORG
Committee E60 on Sustainability is sponsoring a symposium on Balancing Resiliency, Safety, and Sustainability to be held October 13, 2017 in New Orleans. The symposium is intended to address topics related to resiliency, safety, and sustainability and the built environment including hurricane, earthquake, flood/moisture, tornado, and fire resistance; design, material and system contributions to resiliency; life-cycle and public policy considerations. For more information click here.

Symposium on Building Science and the Physics of Building Enclosure Performance
ASTM.ORG
To be held October 21, 2018 in Washington, DC, this symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on current research, both nationally and internationally, regarding building science and the physics of building enclosure performance, with an emphasis on testing and assessment of heat/air/moisture transfer, energy use, and the environment. It will also explore the growing influence of building science on material selection and detailing in both new construction and the adaptive re-use of existing buildings.
