Teaching Videos on Clinical Application of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) 

NYCOMEC and  NYITCOM's OMM Department invite our member institutions to utilize our  OMM teaching videos to help integrate osteopathic manipulative medicine in diagnosis and treatment of their patients. These videos are detailed in demonstrating osteopathic structural diagnosis and osteopathic manipulative treatment techniques for each body region.

OMM Workshop for NYCOMEC Trainees and Faculty

An OMM Workshop, taught by the NYITCOM's Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and designed for the NYCOMEC's trainees and faculty, will take place on  Wednesday, August 2, 2017, from 6:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the OMM laboratory located on the first floor in Serota Academic Center, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury Campus.

Preregistration is required. Due to limited space please RSVP by Wednesday, July 26, 2017. Dinner will be provided starting 5:00 p.m.
NYCOMEC Trainees Graduation Season

NYCOMEC has been represented at several member institutions' graduation ceremonies as the academic year ends.

David Broder, D.O . , President, NYCOMEC, and Lynn Mark, D.O., M.A., Accreditation Director, NYCOMEC, attended  Plainview Hospital's Graduation Ceremony on June 15, 2017 at the North Ritz, Syosset. Tara Zahtila, D.O., Director of Medical Education and Associate DIO-Eastern Region, Plainview Hospital, along with all the program directors, very proudly introduced all twenty seven new graduates. 

On June 20, 2017, NYCOMEC was represented by Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., Trainee Services Manager, at the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center's Graduation Ceremony. E. Kenneth Freiberg, D.O., Vice President, Medical Education, DME/DIO, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to "go forth and share your well deserved knowledge."

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center's graduation ceremony took place on June 21, 2017, at the Mediterranean Manor located in Patchogue, NY. NYCOMEC was represented by Lynn Mark, D.O., M.A., Accreditation Director, who congratulated all the graduates and wished them a great future in the medical field.

Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) very proudly held its  first residency commencement on June 23, 2017. NYCOMEC was represented by its Accreditation Director,  Lynn Mark, D.O., M.A., who congratulated the graduates and spoke about how far the ORMC graduate medical education has progressed since its inception.  To read more please click  here .  

On June 26, 2017, twenty three new physicians graduated from their residency training programs at  Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. David Broder, D.O. , President, NYCOMEC, was among the speakers at this year's graduation ceremony. He congratulated the newest physicians for their commitment to a lifetime of education and self-directed learning and noted that they will be confronted with challenges that today may not even be known.  NYCOMEC was also represented by Lynn Mark, D.O., Accreditation Director and Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., Trainee Services Manager.
Seventh Commencement Ceremony at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Commencement Ceremony of the Class of 2017 from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - Harlem Campus took place on June 15, 2017, at the famed Apollo Theater in New York City. 

NYCOMEC was represented by David Broder, D.O., its President, Kenneth Steier, D.O., M.B.A., M.P.H., Executive Dean, TouroCOM, and Martin Diamond, Interim Dean and Dean Emeritus, TouroCOM - Harlem Campus, both members of the NYCOMEC Board of Directors.

Keynote speaker Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., retired Vice President of Health Science and Medical Affairs at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, reminded the graduates that they are embarking on  a "high calling with awesome responsibilities."

ACGME Updates
ACGME Office of Resident Services Undergoes Restructuring and Rebranding

The ACGME has announced the restructuring of its Office of Resident Services into two distinct offices, the Office of the Ombudsman and the Office of Complaints.  The separation of responsibilities will better clarify their roles in responding to resident issues and concerns.  

The Office of the Ombudsperson
  • Replacing the former "concern process"
  • A collaborative, problem-solving mechanism
  • An opportunity to anonymously report training-related issues without affecting accreditation or Recognition status.
  • Allegations and response(s) do not go to the Review Committee
  • May prompt internal inquiry and review
  • Staff listens and educates about available resources to assist in the resolution of training-related concerns 
The Office of Complaints
  • Complaint process remains the same
  • A confidential reporting mechanism
  • Must allege lack of compliance with ACGME requirements
  • Allegations and response(s) will be reviewed by the Review Committee
  • May prompt an ACGME site visit
  • May impact accreditation or Recognition status

Family Medicine Review Committee - Request Nominations for Resident Member
The Family Medicine Review  Committee seeks  a resident member for a position that will become available July 1, 2018. Nominees must be in good standing in the PGY-2 level as of July 1, 2018 of a three-year ACGME-accredited family medicine program. 3-Day Faculty Development Course on Clinical Evaluation and Assessment of Residents and Fellows

The ACGME and Vanderbilt University Medical Center are co-sponsoring a faculty development course on the clinical evaluation and assessment of residents and fellows. Based on the ACGME's successful "Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment," this three-day course explores competency-based medical education with hands-on activities to develop faculty member competencies in assessment.  The course takes place September 6-9, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. 

Registration is open. Because of the interactive nature of the course, registration is limited to 30 participants.  E-mail questions to [email protected] .

The ACGME's Summer Spotlight Webinar series, which comprises the top-rated sessions from the ACGME 2017 Annual Educational Conference, is now available on the ACGME Webinars page, along with other recorded useful programs relevant to GME.     
ACGME Call for Applications for Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments

The ACGME is seeking up to 10 ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions to participate in its new Pathway Leaders Patient Safety Collaborative, which will focus on optimizing resident/fellow engagement in the six focus areas of the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program: patient safety, health care quality, care transitions, supervision, fatigue management (well-being), and professionalism. The AOA has launched a new webpage that offers resources and literature demonstrating the various benefits of Osteopathic Recognition. These resources can assist programs that are contemplating applying for Osteopathic Recognition by providing research and data to support achieving Osteopathic Recognition.

Nyack Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center and Plainview Hospital Recognized for Excellence in Stroke Care

Two NYCOMEC member institutions, Peconic Bay Medical Center and Plainview Hospital, earned the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll, while Nyack Hospital received the Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll. The designation recognizes each health care facility for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines.
Saint Barnabas Medical Center Named 2017 Hospital of the Year

Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) was named 2017 Hospital of the Year at the eleventh  annual NJBIZ Healthcare Heroes Awards held on June 20, 2017, in Somerset, New Jersey. The Hospital of the Year award honors hospitals making extraordinary strides and exceptional achievements in healthcare.

SBMC also received an " A" rating for safety and quality from the Leapfrog Group. It was the 11th survey in which SBMC received the highest rating, making it one of just 63 hospitals in the nation to achieve this high level.
