Grace: It's Our Way of Life
As Episcopal Christians we
Worship at home daily and together weekly; Study the scriptures, our tradition, and what it means to be a disciple today; Serve our families, our parish, and our world in the name of  Christ. Everything we do is done with an ethic of Welcome because we are only here by Grace.
Where have you welcomed,  worshiped, studied or served?

As Christians, we are called...
by The Rev. Carlton Kelley
Many of you were quite happy that I preached the sermon I preached on June 25 which called into question the propriety of the Senate's health care bill.  Some of you were not.  I want to take this opportunity to explain more fully why I preached that sermon.
As Christians we know that our first allegiance is to the Lord Jesus.  The commandments of God and the teachings of his Son make clear under the guidance of the Holy Spirit how we are to live our lives as best we are able.  Yes, we perceive Jesus' teachings in different ways at different times as we are given to understand his will in a deeper and more generously gracious way. Jesus himself told us that the Holy Spirit will "lead us into all truth." The abolition of slavery, the full inclusion of women click here to read more...

What a mess!
by Ann Hackett, Parish Administrator

If you entered the Parish Hall this week, you probably noticed a collection of dehumidifiers and fans in and around the kitchen area. We had a major sewage back up which revealed itself through a floor drain in the kitchen. Subsequently, flooding occurred in the basement boiler room below. I got a call Sunday afternoon  from the community lunch team that reported the problem.

Since then a number of actions followed:
  • A restoration service came in Sunday night to clean and disinfect both levels in the building
  • They set up fans and dehumidifiers and cut into walls to dry things out
  • Roto-Rooter came in to scope through the pipes to locate the problem
  • Sheren  Plumbing & Heating  (S&H) came in on Monday to assess the situation initially; the building was shut down; neither the bathrooms nor the kitchen could be used until a course of action could be determined
  • S&H returned on Wednesday to meet with representatives of the Building & Grounds Committee (B&G) and me.

The report is not encouraging. We don't actually know what caused the back up. The building was constructed in 1964 and the run of pipes are cast iron. (PVC "pipes" began to be used in the 1970's apparently.) In the examination process, two pipes leading from main level bathrooms in the parish hall have totally disintegrated. A temporary fix now will allow us to use the kitchen next week.

Two choices emerged: do a partial fix of the system where needed or replace all the cast iron pipes. Cost? One fix is less expensive and the other is more expensive. There are a lot of unknowns in the walls and ceilings where the pipes run.

Based on recommendations, the vestry will need to meet in the immediate future and make a determination.

What can you do? Be patient and pray. Ellen is doing a great job of notifying meeting groups and juggling them around into other spaces. The groups most affected are those that serve meals. This weekend the community lunches are still being served but with great effort to do so without access to water. Thank you, Christine Tibbits, for making Friday lunch happen and thank you, Tracie Izatt (Westside  Community Church) for serving the community meal on Sunday as planned.

More news to come.
UGH.

Parishioner in need of furniture
Do you have a sofa, chair, end table or lamp that you could donate to a parishioner who is in need of a few gently used items?  Please contact the office if you can help, and THANK YOU!

What's hiding in your attic?
To help us celebrate our 150th, we would love to find any historical documents, books, newsletters, pictures, directories, newspaper articles and mementos (like plates, mugs, pens or other items) that you may have in your possession.  Perhaps this is a good time to clean out your attic or basement or to begin your downsizing !  Please let the office know what treasures you may find.  We know there are nuggets of information out there - help us find them!  Thank you!

What's Happening at Grace?

What's Happening in our Diocese?

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
