Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria
 Global Botanic Gardens Congress

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has won the bid to host an international Botanic Gardens Congress in 2021.

The seventh Global Botanic Gardens Congress will be held in the world's most liveable city for the first time following a successful winning bid by Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Director and Chief Executive, Professor Tim Entwisle said he was thrilled to announce the exciting news to over 500 delegates at the 6th Global Botanic Gardens Congress recently in Geneva.

"We are very much looking forward to welcoming the global botanic gardens community to Melbourne and to showcase our magnificent city to the world at the seventh Global Botanic Gardens Congress.
"The year 2021 will be an auspicious one for Melbourne Gardens, as we will be celebrating our 175th anniversary."

The proposed theme is 'Botanic gardens as provocation', with a strong emphasis on botanic gardens responding to climate change and urbanization, whilst respecting the needs and aspirations of our first peoples.

To address the theme, the five-day congress will encompass a variety of exciting international presentations, forums and discussions in combination with site tours of local & regional gardens, including major scientific personalities from the global community.

The Congress is scheduled for 7-11 February 2021 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The successful bid to host the Congress was supported by City of Melbourne and the Melbourne Convention Bureau.

Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens
Winning Visitor's Centre Design

Earlier this month the winning design for a proposed Visitor's Centre at the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens was announced.

Five award-winning architects and their design teams were invited to submit their designs. The proposal from John Wardle Architects won the competition jury, which featured eminent members of the architectural profession, a landscape architect and SHBG board members.
