Rector's Reflections
|
Life in Christ Includes Praise and Lament
Though we may prefer to think of God giving us lives of joy and ease, a full life in Christ also includes sorrow and grief. To the extent we are willing to acknowledge God's presence in every circumstance; our faith becomes integrated and sustainable through a lifetime.
Marked by transformation as clear and life and death (Romans 6:12-23), the disciple naturally embodies the gospel of Jesus Christ. Like it or not, this includes moments of sadness, grief, and betrayal that were very much a part of Jesus' faithful journey. When Jesus sends his disciples out as missionaries (Matthew 10:40-42), he warns them of persecution and hardships they will face. He also promises to reward any who aid his followers and support their ministry. If our lives are identified with Christ, disciples can name both joys and sorrows as dimensions of Christ's story and purpose.
The greatest challenge of faith for most Christians is the moment of suffering, so Sunday invites us to practice faithful lament. In an age of denial when difficult things are swept under the rug, we may resist the idea that God wants anything to do with suffering. Our scriptures, however, ensure we do not avoid earth-bound realities. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]
When we gather in worship, the liturgy calls us to gather around God's Word and Sacraments, and faithfully lament as well as praise as we receive the means of grace. May you come to worship Sunday and experience God who directs our lives by grace, and whose words of justice and mercy reshapes the world. May we be molded into a people who welcome God's Word and serve one another.
In Christ,
Bill

Summer Fair Angels
|
It takes over $3,000 dollars pay for the expenses of running the Summer Fair. Some of those expenses are used to rent the tents, pay for police supervision, and buy food that will be sold.
Several years ago Fair Angels was established to pay for those expenses so that every dollar taken in at the fair will be on the profit side of the ledger. Not everyone has time to spend in sorting, pricing, and even working at the fair. Fair Angels is a great way to help make the fair financially successful. A check made out to All Saints can be dropped off at the main office or placed in the collection plate. Please note on the check that the money is to be used for the Fair Angels.

Chris Christiansen & Ralph Cornwell
|
Photo taken of Chris and Ralph on Pentecost Sunday, June 4th
Chris and Ralph and families arrived at All Saints in 1972.
The following year, Chris was on the Vestry that offered the call to Reverend Randy Dales. In 2001, Reverend Dales and Reverend Don Wilson - who was the rector before Rev. Dales - married Ralph and Chris at All Saints.
Chris laughed when she told me that because both Rectors married them, they are REALLY married.
Over the decades both have served the church in many capacities and one or both have served as Vestry members, Sunday School Teacher, Summer Fair Chair, LIFE Ministries volunteer, and Caregiver driver. Presently both are members of the Choir.
Chris stated that they both love All Saints because it is important that they worship with a community of believers, and share the Episcopal Spiritual Rituals. It is important for both of them that All Saints is open for everyone.
Chris again laughed when she added that we are probably best known - along with Dot Hyde-Williams - for bringing dogs to church.
Chris and Ralph have a long and wonderful history of over four decades with All Saints. We have all benefited from their ministry at All Saints, and we are grateful that they are still active in the life of our church.

History of Immigration & Governmental Policies
|
James W. Ziglar, Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service in George W. Bush Administration
Stevens Room: July 9th - 11:30 AM
Migration Ministry-
All Saints launched its Migration Ministry in January. Since then, parishioners have donated over 500 pairs of socks to the No More Deaths humanitarian group to help reduce deaths in the Southwestern US desert; have increased All Saints' financial support of Cristosal's efforts to provide safe places in Central America for families threatened by gang violence in El Salvador; and has established a partnership with the International Institute of New England (IINE) that helps settle official refugees sent to New Hampshire. Aside from a financial contribution to IINE, our partnership has entailed a few visits to the church by groups of refugees on several Sundays, giving parishioners a chance to meet some new Americans that IINE is supporting, and generous donations by parishioners of household goods, furniture, used computers, clothing (through Lord & Tailor), and food (from the Food Pantry). More household and furniture items will be donated on July 15 at the end of the Summer Fair.
Information on how to make future donations to refugees arriving in NH is contained in a brochure that is available in the Narthex. Notifications and descriptions about the many activities of IINE are available on Facebook and its website www.iine.org.
For those interested in learning about the history of immigration to the US and those with questions about various types of migrants and governmental policies, there will be a special presentation at 11:30am on July 9th in the Stevens Room at All Saints by James W. Ziglar. Jim was the last Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the George W. Bush Administration, is on the board of directors of Human Rights First, and formerly was on the boards of the Migration Policy Institute and the National Immigration Forum. He served in other governmental positions as a staff member of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, as clerk to Supreme Court Associate Justice Harry Blackmun, as Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Interior (Reagan Administration), and as Sergeant at Arms of the US Senate. Jim also worked for many years as Managing Director of UBS Financial Services (formerly Paine Webber).

Introduction to the Qur'an
|
Above photo of Bill Voss was taken on June 29th
All Saints member Bill Voss presented - as part of the Wolfeboro discovers Islam series - an introduction to the Qur'an by using selected readings from the Qur'an on religious tolerance and warfare. Bill gave handouts that were used by the group to read the various subsections under each of the two main topics. Lively discussions followed each of the readings. The ninety minute session passed very quickly, and the readings and discussion ended with a multi faith prayer by Reverend Petersen. Thoughtful and informal discussions continued after the conclusion of Bill's presentation.

Music That Makes Community

MUSIC THAT MAKES COMMUNITY
On Saturday, June 24th, four All Saints musicians had a wonderful opportunity to attend an inspirational music conference in Portland, Maine. Ralph and Holly Simons, Michelle Coffey and Susan Fuller carpooled to St. Ansgars Lutheran Church to hear presenter Paul Vasile (and co-presenter Jennifer Hitt, newly installed rector in Laconia area) lead about 25 attendees in an experience of "paperless singing" for most of the day.
Paul travels the nation with an organization entitled "Music That Makes Community", and works with co-presenters to train musicians and lay leaders how to connect with a practice of singing that seems new, but in reality is very old. A short quote helps open up our understanding:
"Power and grace are found in all kinds of singing, but listening attentively, taking in the logic of song, hearing our sisters and brothers working to hear and interpret with us, encouraging and supporting timid singers, opening our hearts to sing together --- these are qualities that come to the fore in paperless singing. We think you can find.... in the practice of paperless singing, a way of revealing and opening up the power in all types of church music." (Donald Schell, a founder of MTMC).
Four of us left this conference, and traveled on a gorgeous June afternoon to the Eastern Promenade, overlooking the Portland Bay area, (see picture) to process together the joy and excitement we felt in how to continue learning and begin sharing with our own community this style of worshipful singing together. Stay tuned!
