We are heading into summer and things are heating up here at Lazarex Cancer Foundation! The main goal of Lazarex is to help advanced stage cancer patients gain access to clinical trials and the number of patients seeking our help grows every year. In fact, we provided financial assistance to 649 patients in 2016 but, by May this year, we have already helped 626 patients!

This accomplishment comes with a new challenge. The requests for our services are outpacing our incoming donations and resources, causing a delay in approving new patients, which is exceptionally disheartening. Last month we held a spring fundraising campaign to bridge the gap between donations and patients. We are happy to announce, thanks to your generosity, that we raised close to $10,000.

While $10,000 is a good start, we still have a long way to go. To help make supporting Lazarex easier, we have set up a monthly giving option. With so much going on in everyday life, we want to make it easy for you to support the fight against cancer. Your monthly donation will help us continue our tenacious mission, and we truly appreciate every dollar contributed to our cause.

It is because of your past support that we are celebrating a decade of assisting cancer patients in clinical trials. I’m personally inviting each of you to attend our 10th Anniversary Gala on August 5th. Gail Stover is not supposed to be alive right now. His doctors expected his life to be over in 90 days after he was diagnosed with Merkel cell carcinoma. They didn’t expect for Gail to do whatever it took to keep breathing. They weren’t anticipating a man from a state with one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the nation to cross state lines every other week to receive care. They didn’t know the strength of Gail’s will to survive.

Gail knew very well that he was going to fight to keep living. He knew he wouldn’t hesitate to drive 600 miles from Missouri to Oklahoma and back twice a month. The 25,000 miles of transit last year in pursuit of better health was an easy tradeoff when the alternative was certain death. He was simply grateful to have the clinical trial treatment available within driving distance from his home. Gail is only in year two of the nine-year program, but don’t expect his drive to survive and thrive to run out any time soon. With top-of-the-line care, Gail is confident in his outcome and is happy to prove anyone who doubts him wrong.

Don’t Miss Our 10-Year Celebration Gala!

Our 10th anniversary gala is going to be BIG. In addition to the wide array of Lazarex’s diverse supporters attending, Caly Bevier, cancer survivor and star of America’s Got Talent, will be performing live at the event. HGTV’s Flip or Flop star, Tarek El Moussa, also a cancer survivor, will be hosting our red carpet and welcoming guests as they arrive. Furthermore, we are excited to present Taelor Scott and Sydni Scott, the two daughters of the late ESPN anchor and impactful cancer patient, Stuart Scott, with our Impact Award.

140.6 Miles of Hope

Jon Casanova Arellano and Kimberly (Kim) Ong are no strangers to tough battles. In 2012, Jon’s mother and Kim took on a new fight after both were diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks apart. Jon had no plans of sitting idly by while the two most important women in his life fought the disease. Through the Team Lazarex (fka Team for Life) Cancer Busters program, Jon and Kim have raised $7,850 for Lazarex with creative fundraisers like cooking, raffles, hikes, a virtual run, and competitive endurance events. Jon’s most recent success for Lazarex came in 2016 as he completed his first 140.6-mile race in the Ironman Vineman. We are deeply thankful for the couple’s success and their passionate support for our mission.

“There are many options out there for charities or groups or organizations whom you can choose to help. There’s raising awareness, there’s helping fund research, and then there is the Lazarex Cancer Foundation. This foundation helps end stage patients get the treatment that they may not be able to afford or have access to. I want to help those families find hope. With their access to these trials, hopefully a miracle can be found.”

Volunteers Help Lazarex
in a Plethora of Ways

In 2016, Lazarex volunteers donated 8,644 hours! Those hours translate to an estimated value of $345,228.53. More than just $$, those hours have enabled Lazarex to share our message through media, at health fairs and race events. They have helped to grow our race participants, hold fundraising events, and communicate with our donors. Our volunteers have made it possible for us to gain a presence in corporate work places, manage our databases, and record our activities through photographs and video. Furthermore, we’ve been able to present our programs to the medical community and prospective patients, engage community through social media, and grow our organization with the oversight and guidance of community leaders through our board of directors.
